CBD Oil - Not What You Think
When companies claim that their CBD Oil is pure, it means it contains nothing but CBD. Nothing! That is, the product contains only a single cannabinoid, CBD. It is an extract. Get it? Most of the ingredients, other than CBD, have been removed...ingredients that are healthy for you, that are needed by the body, that research is showing are necessary. There is a net loss of terpenes and cannabinoids when the product is 'pure CBD'. 'Pure CBD' means that you, as the consumer, are getting ripped off when you buy it. There is NO Full Spectrum of ingredients when it is 'pure'. You are purchasing a product that has been highly diluted. Diluted of terpenes and all other cannabinoids. So, the term, 'Pure CBD' is used as a marketing technique to get you to purchase a product. I wouldn't do it.
Another term that is being used is 'Full Spectrum CBD Oil'; it's a misnomer as well as it is not possible to have a full spectrum of the cannabinoids and terpenes in an oil! Why? To make an oil based on today's processing techniques, everything is removed except the CBD, cannabidiol. That is, to make a CBD Oil, the terpenes and cannabinoids have to be removed. When they are removed from the source (cannabis) through a process that focuses in on extracting CBD only, then the remaining ingredient is 'pure CBD'...not what I'm looking for. (As noted above, the term 'pure CBD' is a misleading marketing technique that means you bought only CBD and nothing else! But the consumer is unaware of this fact. When you buy 'pure CBD', you think you are getting the best, but you are buying a much less efficient product and delivery system as opposed to what you could be getting. Pure does not mean healthy or holy or complete or 'the best'. It means that only CBD, 1 of the 118 cannabinoids, exists in that bottle of oil you just bought).
Actual Cannabis oil is not an oil at all, but a thick tar extracted from the cannabis plant for its medicinal properties. The tar in no way looks, acts, or feels like the oil that is sold in stores today. To make an oil from cannabis, the cannabis must undergo tremendous processing resulting in a product that is very depleted and not at all as effective as it could be. Additionally, making an oil leaves a huge environmental footprint. To make an oil, companies must use one of three extraction methods.
The original extraction method was developed by a Canadian, Rick Simpson. He wanted to create a product with very high potency. So, he used 190 proof alcohol to make an oil from the bud and the process became known as the Rick Simpson Oil Method (RSO Method). The bud was soaked in a pot with the alcohol, then heated at very high temps (heat destroys) to boil out the alcohol. What remained was used to treat his cancer which recent research and anecdotal evidence shows to be effective.
To make it into an oil from the tar (a.k.a. a paste), the paste then has to be separated from the plant matter (more processing).
Most of the CBD companies have switched from the RSO Method described above to either a butane or CO2 extraction method to create the oil. These methods destroy up to 99% of the terpenes. Additionally, butane leaves a chemical residue that many experts say is toxic.
Because the terpenes have been destroyed in the extraction process, CBD Oil companies have found that the terpenes must be added back otherwise their product sucks a lot more than it does now. But, they are getting their terpenes from a non-cannabis source to replace the terpenes naturally found in the cannabis plant. These terpenes are not the natural terpenes found in cannabis or hemp, and cannot adequately replace them as research is finding. The natural terpenes found in cannabis and hemp have a synergistic effect that cannot be replicated by adding back terpenes from other sources not related to cannabis / hemp. The Entourage (or full-spectrum) Effect becomes non-existent. As a matter of fact, research is suggesting that adding terpenes from different sources might make the extracts unhealthy.
The CBD Oil industry has been producing and selling CBD oil using an extraction method, but what you are getting is a CBD isolate. This means there is nothing in the oil but extracted CBD and marketed as 'pure CBD'. 'Pure CBD' is missing the other 117 cannabinoids! And it’s missing almost all of the terpenes originally found in the cannabis plant itself! So, there is no full spectrum, no Entourage Effect, and no synergy.
The Cost to Produce inferior CBD Oil is very high. The process destroys most of the terpenes and removes almost all of the other cannabinoids as noted above. The process is so destructive that its medicinal value is greatly decreased while the cost to the consumer is tripled! Additionally, not only does making an oil damage the healing attributes, but as noted above, it also leaves that environmental footprint that have become so aware of recently. Imagine all the machines and chemicals used to make CBD oil whereas Hemp Paste (described below) uses no chemicals or machines.
There is only one company that makes a paste and they are in Colorado. Fortunately, they do not make a CBD Oil, pure or otherwise. This company does not use any of the extraction methods described above. They do not destroy the plant via its processing methods. Rather, they use very low heat to make a paste from the whole plant that preserves the terpenes and the delicate cannabinoids (so nothing of value is destroyed). Again, they do not make an oil from this process. They make a tar-like paste and they are the only company that does so. The paste is over 50-75% less expensive than the chemically treated CBD Oil that everyone is buying on the market today.
The company is called My Nutra based in Woodland Park, Colorado. I found out about them because I wanted to learn more. So, I researched online. I attended a lecture. I did more research. I found that My Nutra made the most sense processing-wise, product quality-wise, and educationally. They have scientists and science behind everything they do, both in their product and in their education including third-party lab testing for cannabinoids, terpenes and pesticides.
