Finding peace through sound Rising Sun Yoga relieve
stress with Kirtan chanting
BY BETH OATES
THE NEWS-HERALD
Some people relieve stress by yelling and screaming, but Rising
Sun Yoga is taking a different approach to relaxation: Kirtan chanting.
Kirtan chanting is devotional singing that traditionally is a call and-
response form — the singer sings a line and the group repeats it.
“Kirtan” is from the Sanskrit word meaning “to sing.”
The yoga facility has had kirtan chanting about once a month, using
audio recordings of musician David Stringer.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Javier, another kirtan chant musician, will be at
Rising Sun Yoga. The public is welcome and there is no charge.
Next up is Michigan’s own Happiness and Full Bliss Chanting
Band to please the ears and relax the soul at 7 p.m. Nov. 15. Also open to the
public, admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Using the
call-and-response form, there are no verses to memorize and
anyone can join in. A kirtan chant typically lasts one and a half to two hours
and can include poetry reading and the sharing of spiritual teaching through
stories and anecdotes. Chanting combines singing and music with mantras —
sounds that vibrate at the highest level of awareness. If all of that sounds a
little esoteric, Rising Sun Yoga instructor Jim Pero said there’s a more
fundamental reason to join in. “It’s a lot of fun. It just opens you up. “I’m
not a scientist, but it’s been found that chanting relieves stress
and I’ve read online that it cures depression.” According to the Rising Sun Yoga
Web site, www.risingsunyoga.com,
chanting can lower blood pressure, decrease heart disease, reduce stress and
allow the negative impact of stress on the body to dissolve. Pero pointed out
that chanting isn’t just an ancient Indian or Hindu tradition. “You’ll find it
in a lot of customs,” he said. “Native Americans chanted around fires and had
drumming chants. “Catholics chant with beads of the rosary. It’s not just a yoga
tradition.” With kirtan chanting, Pero said, they use actual Sanskrit words.
“You don’t even have to know what the words mean to see the benefit,” he said.
“It’s the vibrations of the sounds that heal.”
