RISING SUN YOGA
Ancient art finds its way to small communities
Less than a decade ago, the ancient Asian art of yoga was struggling to find
students to fill studios across the United States. These days, the number of
yoga fans has more than tripled to an astounding 20 million followers, according
to the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
While yoga studios previously were only found in trendy areas such as
Manhattan and Los Angeles, the art is now finding its way to even the smallest
communities. Downriver now has its mark on the yoga map, with the addition
of Rising Sun Yoga, which opened in Southgate earlier this year.
“Yoga practice boosts the benefits of mental, physical, and spiritual well
being”, owner Jim Pero said. Pero, a yoga instructor, and wife Kathy, opened
the studio downriver to “teach the benefits of yoga and encourage everyone to
incorporate yoga into their daily lives”.
Some of the benefits of practicing yoga include stress reduction, relaxation,
meditation, and increased flexility. Another great advantage about yoga,
according to Pero, is that it’s not limited to age or physical condition. Pero’s
studio holds several different classes, including kids, prenatal, beginning and
continuing hatha yoga, kundalini, vinyasa, and gentle yoga for seniors, round
bodies and the flexibility-challenged. In addition, Rising Sun Yoga occasionally
holds workshops on topics relating to meditation, chakras, self-hypnosis,
crystal use and spiritual healing. For individuals “on the recovery path”,
the studio offers a serenity yoga class, free of charge, which is held on Friday
evenings at 7:45 p.m. On Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m., the studio holds a Vinyasa
class on a “love offering basis”,for those who may be financially
challenged.
Rising Sun Yoga, located at 13550 Dix-Toledo Road, offers more than 40
drop-in classes a week, some beginning as early as 5:30 a.m. and as late as 8:30
p.m. They provide mats, studio props and bottled water with each class. The
first class is free and each additional class is $12 — or $10 for students
under 16 and senior citizens. Package deals also are available.
Rising Sun Yoga features a gift shop offering yoga-related items, including
props, books, CDs, videos, aromatherapy, candles and greeting cards. It is open
seven days a week.
