"The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison." Dr. Ann Wigmore, N.D

TUNE INTO THE RAW TRUTH

What is eating raw?

Eating fruit, vegetables, seeds and nuts that have not been heated over 115-118 degrees Fahrenheit. Using a low temp dehydrator, Vita-Mix blender, a good knife and food processor, its freaking amazing what very satisfying and delicious foods you can make. Burgers, meat loaf, bread, crackers, cheese, cakes, pies, ice cream , to name a few. Six years ago David Wolf’s “Sunfood Diet System” was one of a handful of books by authors spelling out this new way of looking at eating only raw foods and the amazing results. Today there are 721 books in an internet search for books that touch on, if not solely about, eating or preparing raw foods and/or their health benefits.

Why eat raw?

Calm, cheerful, alert, ready for anything life hands you. Sound Good? Craving disappears. You feel AMAZING. All of the people who embrace this way of eating experience a profound change in health, including the end of common illnesses, increased intelligence, etc.

In a simple heartfelt book by the Butenko family, “Raw Family”, their son was cured of childhood onset diabetes, the daughter cured of asthma, the father of rheumatoid arthritis, among other things. Mrs. Butenko cured her persistent arrhythmia and obesity. Victoria Butenko mentioned during a talk a few years ago, how her son’s fillings fell out of his teeth and new enamel grew in its place after he switched to this diet.

The down side is the inevitable detox you will experience as you walk “out of the valley of the shadow of death”. Its similar to quitting smoking. It can be unsettling, as if you become someone else and don’t recognize yourself. Who is this miserable person?!

It seems the difference comes from the live enzymes, live vitamins, and absorbable colloidal minerals. The poor body stops having to give up lavish amounts of its enzymes to digest the food that had its own enzymes before it got cooked. The body can then use the freed up enzymes to do things most of us didn’t know the body could do.

Where’s the proof?

Causing a stir these days is a study and subsequent book called “The China Study” Written by an amazing researcher/professor out of Cornel University, T. Colin Campbell, a book describing an enormous multi decade study that he headed, studying tens of thousands of people showing that our “normal” protein consumption causes cancer, that a vegetarian diet is hands down optimal for health, and other ground shaking findings come the closest to proof. The rest is your unshakeable real life experience.

What is great reading in the Raw Food book world?
David Wolf, “Sunfood Success System”, “Eating For Beauty”
Victoria Butenko and any of her family, “Green Life”, “Raw Family” and “Eating Without Heating”
Alissa Cohen, “Living On Live Foods”
Gabriel Cousins, “Conscious Eating”
Rio, “Hooked On Raw”
Carol Alt, “Eating In The Raw”

So why not give raw a try?

What Can Yoga Do For You?

With more and more people discovering yoga we are often asked the question, what can yoga do for me? The answer may seem a little unbelievable to those unfamiliar with yoga and yoga philosophy. Yoga being a system of wellness for the body, mind, and spirit might not have any limitations on what it can do for you. However, there are some things one should know if you plan to achieve success in making changes in your life by practicing yoga.

First off benefits will come immediately but long term sustained and deep changes come from a continued practice over many years. Yoga is not a fast food fix to your deeper issues, but given time can provide miraculous results to health issues, weight regulation, stress and anxiety relief, sleep disorders, detoxification and much, much more. There is a reason yoga has been carried on for thousands of years, it works.

Equally important is letting go of the results. We practice with intentions, but we let go of the need for any certain outcome. This is an essential ingredient and should not be over looked. So if our intention is weight loss we practice diligently, patiently with faith over time. We avoid jumping on the scale to weigh in each week or measure our distance in a stretch. We let the desired changes evolve naturally without force. Slowly and safely the body will adjust to it’s ideal weight and flexibility and overall health.

Most importantly though is learning to listen to your own body. No one else can determine what is best for you like you can, by developing an ear for your own needs. This is probably the greatest mistake most people that begin the practice of yoga make. Not listening to the body can lead to injury or other undesirable results. It cannot be stressed enough to honor the sensations the body shares with the mind. Ignore the body and you are sure to defeat yourself. Working with a qualified instructor can certainly aid our progress, but only you can feel what is happening in you and decide if a recommended coarse of action is working. If it isn’t, it is best to change coarse and modify your practice. As you find certain practices that do agree with you remember that it is the sustained practice without concern over the results which produce the most success.

So take your practice slow, learn to listen, and let go of the results. Let yoga be a long term practice to maintain your well being for the rest of your life. Let your yoga practice work for you and enjoy the journey.

Peace, Light, and Love,

Jim

Surrendering To Your Higher Will

It seems like another lifetime when I think of myself in the Navy. Sometimes it is hard to even believe that I served in the military at all. Yet, vivid are the memories of my six active years of duty when I do look back. Like many in this country after high school I didn’t see much of a future. Going to college was only an option if I paid for it and the jobs I had barely sustained me. Unemployment was high and not having skills, experience, or contacts didn’t serve me well. I was young, dumb, undisciplined, and even more naive than I am now. It wasn’t long before my desire for money and stature had me caught up in a roll that I couldn’t live with. Like a kid with a conscious entangled in a gang, discovering killing was an expectation at some point in the game, I was trapped. I knew I couldn’t do what was expected of me if we were asked to launch our nuclear missiles which would kill countless innocent men, woman, and children. Nor did I know to what extreme I would go to prevent such a holocaust. My mind wrestled through my waking hours and kept me awake often when I should’ve been sleeping. As my convictions grew I felt left with no other option than to declare my feeling and I filed for a conscientious objector discharge.

Enlisted personnel filing for conscientious objector status weren’t thought of favorably by my higher-ranking shipmates. I soon found myself cleaning bathroom floors with a tooth brush all night with an armed escort. I humbly cleaned the floors and acted peacefully and without resistance to the attention I found myself receiving. This was the beginning of what I consider to be a change in my life. I had begun to live my life surrendering my will for what I felt was a higher will or what I later learned was called Ishvarapranadana in Sanskrit. After that first night amazing things started to happen. Doors started to swing open in my direction and I started to feel more in sink with the universe instead of grinding against it.

In the two decades that followed I slowly slipped back to the desire for money and stature, to later surrendered again to living to the beat of a different drum. Living tuned in to our higher will is not easy to sustain. Twelve years after being honorably discharged from the service I found myself working in an environment that was less then honest, loving, and caring for both the employees and customers. My health was deteriorating and I was miserable. I had stopped listening. A Christmas time layoff after twelve years with the company felt like the greatest gift that I could ever get. I knew I didn’t want to end up in an similar situation working for someone else and started once again to surrender to a higher will.

Soon my health began to improve. Doors once again began to open. My mental and emotional state progressed. A lifestyle shift towards overall health and well being prompted changes in diet, sleep habits, relationships, physical and mental conditioning, and attitude. These changes have strengthened my immune system, increased my energy levels, and sharpened my thinking.

Can you stand some healthy sifts in your life? By tuning into the more knowing instincts within you can begin to let your higher will take you in new directions. I am not suggesting anything radical, but just to align yourself to the possibility of allowing for gentle effective changes in your life. Listen carefully to your deeper pure yearnings and act accordingly/responsibly. Make changes you know you should make. See if your life doesn’t get more in sync with the universe and watch for doors opening in your life.

Most of all enjoy your journey,

Ji m

Karma Yoga News ~September ‘06

We have several things going on this month for you to consider. First we need some folks to help with the arts and craft table for the Program for Exceptional Families (PEF) Family Fun Day on Sunday, September 17th from noon to 2:30. The PEF is a multidisciplinary clinic for handicapped children and this annual event is a chance for their whole family to have a good time. The kids--and the adults--love the crafts table and we need people to help them make wonderful creations. The fun day is at Jaycee Park in Taylor, which is on Pinecrest between Pelham and Mortenview (near St. Cyril's Church). Call Lisa at 734.284.8918 or email at Lisa.Rutledge@oakwood.org if you can help on the 17th.

We are also collecting cash donations--large or small--for AIDS Walk Michigan--City of Detroit on behalf of AIDS Partnership Michigan. APM is Michigan's largest and oldest AIDS service agency and funds from this event cover all kinds of needs that the agency has that are not covered by grants. We appreciate you leaving whatever you can in the collection box. AIDS is still a major issue for many of our neighbors in Southeastern Michigan and support services are only possible by donations such as what are collected from AIDS Walk. You can check out more about APM at: www.aidspartnership.org.

Last and not least, Oakwood needs race day volunteers for our annual "Red October Run" on Saturday October 7th. All work is in the morning, starting as early as 6am. Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties to help operate this very popular 5k/10k run and 5k walk. Call Cindy Cook at 313.586.5486 or email her at Cynthia.Cook@oakwood.org.

I'm always looking for ideas for karma yoga projects, so if you have an idea, please let me know. Have a great month and I hope you see you around at the studio!

Namasté,

Lisa
