"Our bodies are perishable, wealth is not at all permanent and death is always nearby. Therefore we must immediately engage in acts of merit." ~Chanakya

Wishing You a Wonderful Labor Day Weekend

Change Can Be A Good Thing!

Teachings of impermanence is found in ancient sacred text written thousands of year ago, but nothing teaches impermanence like nature. From the subtle change of the seasons to the instant devastation of a hurricane we learn that nothing last forever. Loved ones, homes, families, jobs, pets, and ourselves are sure to pass. Impermanence often generates the emotion of sadness or even depression and brings forth the need for love, compassion, and healing. Yet, without impermanence we could not have change for the better. The truth of impermanence can bring us hope.

War and violence will not last for ever.

The rapid destruction of the planet will cease.

Starving people will be no more.

Cruelty to animals stops.

Food becomes sacred again.

The lies will end.

Impermanence guarantees us that we can change what is not for our highest good. On an individual level impermanence teaches that we can change ourselves. This can be subtle like the season or it can be immediate like power of a hurricane to eliminate what it is about you that you want to change. Do you want to lighten your day? Apply the thought of impermanence to: high gas prices, genetically modified food production, pollution, your credit card balance, or maybe inflexible hip sockets. Everything can and will change.

Our studio has been experiencing change in the form of growth and physical appearance. Lately changes the studio have been swift, like the end of providing bottled water. We will continue to supply free hot water for tea, room temp, and cold water through the use of an amazing filtration system and water cooler, but the use of thousands of plastic bottles along with the energy, cost, and time to deliver them has ended. Look for Stainless Steel Rising Sun Yoga water bottles to be available soon.

The Yoga Sutras teach us that we need to change our mental habit patterns in order to move towards self realization. It points to Meditation to assist us in becoming more aware of our thought patterns so that we can begin to replace self limiting thoughts with higher thoughts. If your not meditating maybe it is time for a change. Join us on Monday nights at 8pm for a free half hour meditation class.

Have you been pushing yourself to your edge with work, family, household chores, gardening or other things? Maybe a change is in order for your busy life style. Consider joining us in October at a yoga retreat center of excellence for Thai Massage or Tai Chi, Yoga, and the magnificence of natures color change.

Oh coarse there is an exception to every rule. There is one thing that is said to never change. In yoga we call this Purusa, the animating principle in living beings, the soul, spirit as opposed to prakrti, or matter. Purusa is what we honor in each other when we say Namas té. It is the oneness that is talked about by sages, rishis, gurus, messiahs, and other enlightened beings.

As summer draws to a close keep your thoughts warm and glowing like the radiance of the sun. As nature proves the impermanence of the season know that the undesirable conditions of your life are impermanent as well. You have the same power as nature to produce the changes that are needed in your life. Your thoughts are producing your condition, are you ready to change your thoughts?

Namas té,

Jim

Karma Yoga

Yogic philosophy teaches that one of the paths to enlightenment is selfless service. Our Karma Yoga program gives you the opportunity to give of yourself to the community or Rising Sun Yoga. If one of these opportunities speak to you we encourage you to get involved.

If I have been of service, if I have glimpsed more of the nature and essence of ultimate good, if I am inspired to reach wider horizons of thought and action, if I am at peace with myself, it has been a successful day. ~ Alex Noble

The classes are a great way to learn more about lifting your energy, boosting your immune system, and curing illness through better eating habits. Sign up to help out at the studio. The value of impermanence is to call attention to the permanent. ~ Stuart Davis

A Yoga Teachers Greatest Reward
The Gift of Gratitude

I would like to take this time to give thanks for the awesome changes that has gone on in my life due to Yoga at Rising Sun. It's coming up on one year since I first started Yoga. I started I guess, like most people, for the personal benefits such as flexibility, balance and general health. During the beginning when I was just getting started I scoffed (to myself) at the "warm-fuzzy" aspects of the yogic principles. It all seemed so "peaceful" or "mushy", but I decided anyway to keep an open mind. After all, I've been wrong many times...so I took my ego down to off the shelf and kept my ears open.

Wow, It didn't take long before I realized how amazing, intricate (yet so very simple) and serious this was. The asanas...they were just the tip of the iceberg and I was turning the bow of my ship right into it! Through your instructor (my teacher) I became hungry. I gained much from her teachings. Her energy...I haven't witnessed that in a person in a long time. A friend of mine is one of those few life-forces that had such a gathering/magnetic effect, so once I saw this in her I knew there was something there. Her relations to the readings of the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita and our lives today built clear understanding. She teaches without fear, much knowledge, constant adjustments/refinements and with loving patience. It was rather easy to gain awareness this way. So I started to read and I began to meditate and returned to reading my bible. I'd cross reference, theory of life and seeing this thread in the everyday. I was now laughing at life...of course I've always enjoyed life, but the love for such simple principles and routines....the doors were opening.

Physically my body felt amazing. I could feel "cleaner" and centered. I understand where my body is in relation to the earth in a sense that I had never had. Now, this is a real benefit, since I rock and Ice climb and that makes all the difference when going vertical. Through the readings and contemplations I also came to a real interesting change as well. It's going now on two months and my diet is almost 100% vegan. I've always admired my friend and climbing partner. He's been a vegan for almost 15 years, but I would refer to him as the "treehugger" and he would warmly call me "the redneck" . As I started to grasp the greater understanding of all of life I had this willingness to change and not even concern myself with all the stuff I'd miss. It was weird how easy it was. And understand, I am a guy who'd hunt deer, turkey, pheasant, ruffed grouse and rabbit. So this impact is, to me, bigger than most. I still look upon myself as a predator, but do I need to kill? Do I want to be a part of this destructive cycle?

There are so many other aspects that has influenced my life due to Yoga. The need for devoting my time for selfless service, the push to improve the world through environmental actions and my oversight of my thoughts and actions. Of course I've a LONG way to go, but that's alright. So again, I'd like to thank you for this doorway that has been opened. Please thank Micha for her divine light and love that blankets all of us in class. God clearly works through her. Rising Sun is a great studio.

Namasté,
