Overcoming The Human Condition
Regardless of which form of yoga you practice, over coming the human condition is one of the targets of the practice. In life there are various degrees of suffering and living yogically helps us to transcend our woos.

Mother Nature and her destructive power has recently directed our attention to human conditions that make us truly grateful for what we have. Scenes and stories of life, death, and destruction in the impoverished deep south has impacted us all in one way or another. Some were called to action, others to give, many point fingers of blame, still others pray and meditate for peace and love. Truly many have suffered.

In the world in which we live the waters are contaminated, skies polluted, the earth is being stripped of her resources, the food is artificially manufactured, good people (our children) are dying in wars and violent actions, and more and more money is spent on war and given to elite corporations. Those sensitive to these conditions or affected by them suffer too.

Day after day we learn about corporate and world leaders making decisions which add to the human condition of suffering. The news reminds us each day of those that walk this planet full of hate and greed. Those that want to make a difference suffer from the lack of knowledge on what they can do to make a difference. I wonder how many people close the doors of carrying because they don’t have the answer or don’t believe that they can make a difference. How many others just carry around a resentment or oppressed feeling.

The cost of living is on the rise, retirement benefits are being cut, layoffs threaten job security, rain forest are being cut down, global warming warnings aren’t heeded, health care and insurance costs are on the rise, It goes on and on. Is the human condition at an all time low? That is certainly open for debate.

For many people on the planet life is golden. They live comfortable or even beyond. There basic needs are met and much more. People are living longer and getting healthier into old age, advancements in medicine and technology have given many a quality of life that would have been unimaginable 50 years ago.

For those that suffer from the human condition, rich or poor, the haves or the have nots, yoga offers help and the way to transcend the human condition. Yoga offers the answer to healing the planet and it’s beings. Yoga teaches us first to not to hurt each other or ourselves. If this basic teaching were applied readily personally and globally it alone could solve most the worlds troubles.

Yoga teaches us to be honest. A little honesty amongst the right people on this planet and big problems could be solved or even better prevented. Personally, honesty can liberate us in many ways and free us from karmic debt.

Taking only what is ours and only what we need is another way that yoga teaches to us to overcome suffering. I love how one of my teachers put yoga into simple terms, “Just treat each other kindly.” Smiling and doing good things for others goes a long way to our own mental and physical well being.

Yoga praises the benefits of meditation helping us to quite the mind, to move into a place of peace and stillness, to be more focused, and to be absorbed in what we focus on. Breathing exercises help us to repair and strengthen our nervous system and immune system. Asana practice helps us to be strong, flexible, balanced and healthy.

Overall yoga teaches us to look at ourselves. It embraces all religions and seeks to unite. It encourages us to do good things without worrying about the out come. It promotes looking inside to find the truth about who we really are. Yoga leads us to the understanding that we are all one. From this place within we learn to live in love, peace, and compassion. When we live and treat each other with love we are doing yoga at it’s best.

I’d like to share with you a simple test you can use to see if you are acting from love, which comes from an interview with Bell Hooks in Ascent Magazine. Bell says love includes six ingredients: care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust. She goes on to say that people confused about love can go about their life asking, “the action I’m taking, does it have these six ingredients?” I hope yoga spreads to those that will make the most impact employing its treasures.

With Love, Jim

Time to Vote Again!

Vote for what, you maybe thinking. It hasn’t even been a full year since we voted George Bush into office. But truly I say to you it is time to vote again. What is voting anyway, but a mere expression of your values? Many people are talking about being dissatisfied with our current administration and it’s values, current polls reflect a low approval rating, and day in and day out I hear the complaints. But let me ask you what good it does to point fingers, call names, get angry, and promote separatism? In Yoga we teach oneness, unity, the belief that we are all spiritually connected, and the need to uphold strong moral values when faced with decisions concerning truth, peace, stealing, sex energy, and jealousy. If we value this belief in unity and oneness then we should look upon those lost struggling souls with compassion and forgiveness. Certainly name calling and blaming is not a yogic approach. Prayers, meditation, and intentions for, on, and guiding our actions toward higher morals and values would be time better spent. But again I say to you it is time to vote.

Okay, so how can you vote? Believe it or not you have the opportunity to vote everyday. Maybe not in the traditional sense of going to the ballots, however there are some yogic alternatives that may be even more significant. First off you vote every time you spend your money. Think of the cash register as your voting ballet; your check book and credit card as your proxy ballot. Consciously voting in this manner is way more rewarding and fun. Vote for lower gas prices by not buying it, or maybe buying less. Find alternatives and minimize your use. Purchase a hybrid vehicle or a diesel which can burn the grease that cook the fast food French fries, or get 700 miles to the tank, car pool, or ride your bike. Do you value nature? Do you want clean water, air, and healthy soil? Vote for a cleaner environment by not purchasing toxins that make there way into our land and water system. Purchase biodegradable household cleaners, stop spraying and sprinkling your lawn with poisons, and purchase non-processed organic fruits and vegetables. Support a local organic farmer. Refrain from purchasing products from corporations that are responsible for the largest amounts of pollution. Vote for less landfills by recycling, composting, mulching your lawn, and not purchasing deposable products. Look for alternatives. Vote for corporations that protect the environment, support fair wages, and honor strong business ethics. Refrain from giving your money to corporations that don’t support your values. Vote for good health care, by spending your money on alternative or complimentary health practices, eliminating genetically modified and processed foods from your diet, eliminating the use of unnecessary medications, supporting community supported agriculture. Just like in a political election you may have to do a little homework to see if your spending, (voting), coincides with your values but education is never wasted.

In Friendly ways we must all help each other to discover the best places to cast our votes. Us old dogs must learn new tricks. We must be flexible and adaptable to change. Open and willing to make a difference. Voting is not just a privilege it is a huge responsibility. Votes wasted (dollars spent) in ignorance must be gently exposed, new ideas awakened, and better direction provided. The time to vote is now.

In an article titled, Using Technology for Common Good SADHGURU JAGGI VASUDEV writes, “Today, with the tools of science and technology we have brought ourselves to a self-threatening situation that everybody in the society needs to turn spiritual, otherwise there is no survival for this world.” The time to vote is now.

In the Bhagavad-Gita Krishna declares, “ Full fill all your duties; action is better than inaction.” Now is the time to vote. What are you voting for? Are you voting for the things you value?

Peace, Jim

Karma Yoga Update

COMPASSION IN ACTION

Four yogis travel to New Orleans to serve their fellow beings.

Lokah samasta sukhino bhavantu

May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that freedom and to that happiness for all.

You may or may not be aware that four rising sun yogis picked up and packed up off to new Orleans for a nine day journey that changed our lives forever. All of us touched by the images and stories we encountered in the days before leaving knew it was our duty to go serve.

We arrived in the heart of it all to find what most would perceive as complete and utter chaos, despair and fear.. As a yogi I found this to be a wonderful opportunity to dig deep into my yogic toolbox to find ways of maintaining my “chitta prasadanam” , peace of mind, blessed mind stuff. A yogi strives to maintain that evenness in the face of total devastation or bliss. A yogi maintains a cool head. Thru my daily practices, meditation, chanting and devoting every action to God I found I was at complete peace, serene and understood that everything was precisely as God had planned. The four of us worked tirelessly and with much love. So many beings were touched by the simple act of letting go and letting God. Many hundreds of lives were saved and my faith was strengthened immensely. Ever night the volunteers would go to bed filthy, exhausted and many in tears. I always took refuge in the fact that a new day was coming and that what was dark would soon be illuminated .The divine light comes like that dawning,. it creeps in, the light slowly but surely comes .I found it was so important when all around me seemed dark, bitter and a void to remember that light, to carry it with me. Never underestimate the power of the dawn the dawn is what will bring the new day. There’s no stopping it.

Thank you to all who supported us as we served!

Much nourishing love to you! Micha
