Taking Off The Mask
With Halloween upon us, or Thanksgiving if your getting this later in the
month, either way this article is timely. On the Eve of Halloween, I began
to ponder the whole costume thing. Isn’t dressing up for Halloween like
putting a costume over a cloaking device for divine treasure. It is like
nature mocking nature. I’m not knocking the holiday mind you only looking at
the simple act of wearing a mask as parity to the body hiding our true
selves.
I had an unexpected treat just before the haunting
holiday. I got an opportunity to meet and get to talk to Lilias. Most
of us know Lilias
through the television set, doing Yoga with her and the rest of America on
the living room floor for years watching her on PBS. Now fourty years of
yoga practice later she talks of how in the early years people were getting
hurt doing yoga and she has learned that no yoga is for everybody. Yoga has
to be adapted to the individual, not the individual to the yoga. I
appreciated hearing her wisdom reaffirming what my greatest teachers have
taught me. But I bring this all up for another reason.
Lilias came to teach her workshop with only one mask and
her inner glow revealed the only hint of that mask. Her warm style and
mannerisms reminded my of my grandmother and the inner strength that she has
always possessed. She placed more importance on spirit and community then
getting the wording down for that perfect asana. As far as I can tell Lilias
walked into the auditorium to teach dressed warmly and conservative carrying
nothing but a confident walk, fantastic posture, and a wealth of yogic
knowledge. With the days turning to night and the community donning costumes
it was refreshing to see such a bright light shining, not hiding, bringing
timelessness, unity, and peace. Thank you Lilias.
This story continues hoping that like Lilias you will
adapt yoga to meet your needs and challenge yourself safely. For a little
deeper look at the mask of your divine nature you might want to try a useful
meditation. But first consider this. In hospitals all across the world
millions of babies are born each day. Babies that are pure love, incapable
of harming others, dependant upon mankind, and glowing with warmth and
vitality. Each of us were once one of those babies. We may have put on
different costumes but that same goodness still lives within. To go within
to find it we must take off the mask of thoughts that keep us from it.
Lilias to spoke too of the realization that we are not our thoughts.
Meditation is one tool that can assist in creating this awareness.
Try this simple yet effective meditation. I have heard it
a few ways but essentially it has you look at who you are or at least who
you think you are in terms of your work, family, social status, ect and to
know that that isn’t really you. Everything could change but there is a you
inside that remains changeless regardless of outer situations. In other
words you work on taking off the masks or layers that we have that keep us
from knowing our true selves. One easy version is to just repeat to your
self “not this” short for “I am not this” applying it to all the thoughts
about who you are and then applying it to all… of your thoughts. Braking
down those layers experience who you really are. Even if you only have a few
minutes give this meditation a shot. See what is waiting behind your mask
and be thankful for the opportunity to connect with your true self.
Peace,
Jim |

Karma Yoga News ~November ‘06
Aloha, my name is Jessica Benson and I belong to a Charity Club that I
started out of my home. We are now combining efforts with Rising Sun Yoga
and will embark on a charitable road of selfless giving for our community
and fellow humans!
I’m inviting the members of Rising Sun Yoga to help us support COTS of
Detroit (www.cotsdetroit.org). They are a homeless shelter
incorporated in 1982 to help individuals and families break the cycle of
homelessness. They operate at or near capacity throughout the year.
Coincidentally, November 10 - 19 is Homeless Awareness week. We will be
holding monthly meetings starting December 15th at the Rising Sun
Yoga Studio. Some of you may have noticed a purple box out in the hall, this
is to collect new art supplies for the children of COTS, (crayons, paints,
paintbrushes, clay, etc…) please donate what you can. Some of the things
we’ll be doing include volunteering at the Dec 16th Santa pancake
breakfast, adopt-a-family for Christmas, and collecting items that
individuals and families of COTS so desperately need As a community we need
to come together to end homelessness in Michigan. Rarely are we looking for
our next meal or a pillow to lay our head, but many are.
Facts about homelessness:*
- Families with children are the fastest growing homeless population.
Nationally, children make up 40% of the homeless population.
- The number of low-income renters has increased, due to factors such as
eroding employment opportunities and the declining value and availability of
public assistance.
A 15 minute miracle is something you can do everyday with little effort,
here is an example:
- When meeting a homeless person on the street and they ask you for
change, it is completely up to you weather you want to give them money.
However, the most important thing you can do is acknowledge them with eye
contact and a brief response.
Just for kids:
- Invite your child or other children in your family to collect
returnables, turn them in and purchase Purina cat, dog food or litter for a
local animal shelter. You can also donate old blankets or towels.
Please feel free to email me with ideas or questions about local
charitable events that we may want to be involved with in the future.

The raw experience
This month we are so happy to announce the visit of raw foodist Michael
Dwyer.
November 15th 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
Michael is going to show us how to make delicious raw
pesto with vegetable pasta that can easily be made at home. See a demo, hear
him speak and experience for your self how great raw enzyme loaded food can
taste!
__________________________________________________
This
completely raw and luscious holiday recipe can be served along with your
family’s meal, whether the rest is raw or not. Grown people have been
observed fighting for the scanty leftovers days later out of the fridge! (It
keeps really well) You will need a sharp knife to finely chop the orange
peel and a food processor to grind it all up.
Quick &
Easy
--------------------------------
Organic Cranberry Relish
If you can’t get all the ingredients organic, be sure you DO use only
organic orange peel. The peel makes the dish.
10-12 oz Organic Frozen Cranberries
4 Organic Oranges peeled, seed and rough cut
Peel of ½ Orange (must be organic) chopped very fine
Or 1 ½ t. dry organic orange rind
1 cup Organic Dates soaked 1 hour or more
1 cup Organic Raisins soaked 1 hour or more
Soak each item in a little filtered water (to almost cover). Drain before
using and save “soak water” to add if you want a wetter relish or
refrigerate for future smoothies.
2/3 cup Organic Walnuts soaked 1-4 hours
(Discard the water and rinse again)
First put the frozen cranberries alone in the food
processor, using the universal “S” blade, break the berries into course
pieces.
Peel, seed and rough cut the oranges, add to the food
processor along with the finely chopped orange peel, soaked dates and
raisins. Process until you like the look of it. I like a chunkier version
that takes less that a minute to process as I watch like a hawk to get just
“the right size”. If you like it more juicy and pureed, you can wash dishes
while the food processor is whirling away. Add the nuts last and just pulse
them in so they don’t disappear on you.
Enjoy,
Faye |

American Premium Blends
is proud to present Cherry Harvest.
Cherry harvest is a combination of tart and sweet cherry blended in such a
way to maximize benefits while providing a surprisingly refreshing taste.
Cherry Harvest is all natural with no preservatives, added sugar or color.
This is cherry juice the way nature intended delicious and nutritious. Tart
and sweet cherry juice are both excellent sources of anthocyanins, a family
of antioxidants that give cherries their bright color but also may play a
critically important role in reducing inflammation, promoting joint health
and reducing the symptoms of gout and arthritis. So try an ounce of Cherry
Harvest your body will thank you for it.
Tart Cherry Harvest
Michigan is the top tart cherry producer in the
United States harvesting 75% of the nation’s tart cherry crop. These
cherries do not normally make it to your local supermarket, mostly because
the tart cherry crop is sent for processing into jams, jellies, pie filling
and of course tart cherry juice concentrate. Scientific research suggests
that enjoying a shot of tart cherry juice concentrate might help defuse
arthritis pain. It is this overwhelming scientific evidence that compelled
us at American Premium Blends to create Tart Cherry Harvest, our own
proprietary blend of tart cherry juice that promotes the health benefits of
tart cherry juice.
Samples are available at the studio, try a
bottle the taste is great.

WHAT’S A COLONIC? #@!?
Lecture on Colon Hydrotherapy November 11 from 5-5:45pm
(FREE)
healing authentically from
the inside out…
nancy gurney certified colon hyrdrotherapist/yoga
Instructor (RYT)/reiki I & II practitioner

With the holidays just around the corner many will suffer from their
usual digestive disorders: irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, just to
name a few. Digestive disorders are the precursor to chronic illness, such
as chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia, etc. The colon is one of the
primary organs of elimination in the human body. When the colon is not
clean, nutrient absorption is drastically reduced, and complete elimination
of waste material may not occur. When the body does not release waste
material, this toxic matter can build up in the system, re-poison the body
and negatively impact other organs. Over time, the lymph, blood, and
intestines become increasingly toxic and terminal disease may form.
What is colon hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy (commonly called a colonic) is a safe and effective
procedure that helps to clean out the accumulated waste material in the
colon. It is one of the most powerful and effective means of cleansing and
detoxifying the digestive system. Colon hydrotherapy is a gentle infusion of
warm purified water into the colon that helps to soften and eliminate old
debris. No chemicals or drugs are involved, and the entire therapy is both
relaxing and effective.
Why is colon hydrotherapy necessary?
Toxins are abundant in our food supply, cleaning products, water, air,
prescription and over the counter drugs, personal care products, and
especially in recreational drugs such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
Once processed by the liver, a large percentage of these toxins must leave
through the colon. Unfortunately, most people's colons are backed up with
undigested processed foods and mucoid plaque. The average person has 6-10
pounds of fecal matter in their colon! How can we expect to feel our best
while carrying around this toxic burden?
What happens during a colon hydrotherapy session?
A typical appointment lasts one hour; with approximately 45 minutes on
the massage table (where the therapy is performed). First appointments last
one and a half hours and include a full intake and consultation. During the
session, I use a disposable speculum and tubing to introduce a gentle flow
of purified warm water into the large intestine (colon). I will administer
several 'fills' and 'releases' and will use abdominal massage techniques to
help dislodge old fecal matter. The dislodged fecal matter is then gently
eliminated through the system's waste disposal tube. Massage, acupressure
points, and foot reflexology are used to help relax the client and encourage
elimination.
I use state of the art FDA approved equipment that utilizes a particle
filter, and a carbon micron filter. We use disposable speculums and tubing,
and all-natural lubricants, lotions, and oils. I am certified by the
International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy.
What can I do to prepare for my colon hydrotherapy session?
The most important thing to do for 24 hours before your session is to
hydrate by drinking plenty of purified water. This will help your body to
flush out toxins and also help soften old waste material in the colon. You
can also start the cleansing process by eating lightly and increasing your
intake of fruits and vegetables. If you would like to maximize the results
of your colon hydrotherapy session, you can begin an internal cleansing
program 3-7 days before your appointment. Please contact me for further
information about cleansing programs. I will also send you pre and post
colonic instructions prior to your first appointment. For two nights prior
to the appt, I recommend taking a natural vegetable laxative called
Cleansemore, by Renew Life. You can purchase this at most of the local
Health Stores Downriver and in Royal Oak.
Will I experience
any discomfort or fatigue during or after the session?
The most discomfort you will experience during the session is a mild
cramping sensation, similar to what you may experience when having a bowel
movement. It is rare that anyone experiences discomfort or fatigue after a
session. A colonic will stir up many toxins and old debris that your body
will need to eliminate, so occasionally clients may notice a mild
discomfort. It is important to rest and drink plenty of water. Ginger and
peppermint tea are also very soothing.
Are colonics addictive?
Because colonics clear out accumulated waste material in the colon, it is
easier for the colon to function normally after a colonic than it did
before. Colonics also encourage peristalsis, the natural muscle contractions
of the colon, so the colon muscles are actually strengthened by doing
colonics. Most clients report that they are much more 'regular' after
completing a few colon hydrotherapy sessions.
Will a colonic wash out the friendly bacteria in my colon?
A healthy colon has a proper balance of good and bad bacteria. Good
bacteria, friendly bacteria, flora, and probiotics are all names for the
same thing. Good bacteria eat up undigested food matter, produce B
vitamins which boost the immune system and reduce stress levels, and relieve
constipation. Because of the modern lifestyle, most people have too many
toxin-producing bad bacteria in the colon, which can contribute to many
health problems. The good bacteria in the colon can not thrive in the
presence of all the bad bacteria. Colon hydrotherapy cleans out the colon so
that the proper environment exists where good bacteria can thrive. The body
will naturally produce good bacteria to replenish the colon, and you can
also take a probiotic supplement after your session to help your body
replenish the good bacteria. Please contact the center for further
information about probiotics.
Will one colonic clean out all of the old waste material in my colon?
We spend most of our lives accumulating old fecal matter in the colon, so
it is not realistic to think we can clean it all out in one session. Most
clients experience the best results by doing a series of colonics.
After the initial series, how often do I need to get colonics?
This depends on the lifestyle you live and the level of health you want
to achieve! Just as some people exercise on a daily or weekly basis to tone
and tighten their outer body, some people follow an ongoing cleansing,
toning, and rebuilding regime for the inner body.
