Thank You |
|
The prewriting of this article was a growth
experience in itself. Taking time to reflect on the topic set off a cascade
of thoughts of appreciation for a great many things. I thought of listing
all the things that I am
thankful for in my life. However, putting myself in your shoes, I felt it
would be a humdrum read. Besides, the more time I spent thinking of what I’m
thankful for, the more things I came up with. Before long I realized that
there isn’t anything that I’m not thankful for. I am thankful for everything
in my life past and present good and bad. The “bad” things in my life
provide(d) opportunities for growth and development. Besides life would be
boring if everything was perfect. Problems provide opportunities to work
through solutions. They challenge us and build character. Like Friedrich
Nietzsche said, “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” I do find myself
slipping out of this mind set from time to time, but when I really think
about it, I am thankful for everything in my life. |
Being thankful or having an attitude of gratitude is a positive state of
mind that I feel has beneficial effects on your health. For example, at
times in my life when I have felt depression setting in, I’ve focused on
things that I’m thankful for. Almost instantly affirming an attitude of
“Almost instantly affirming an attitude of gratitude
relieved the early feelings of depression.”
gratitude relieved the early feelings of
depression. I would love to know if this works this way for anyone else. The
mind is a powerful tool. Just like we choose a speed or direction on a
drill, we must choose the setting of our mind in order to use the tool
properly. Set you mind on thank you and let it work for you. Take a few
moments even now and sit tall take a few deep breaths and just affirm to
yourself I am thankful. Inventory the mind and to whatever enters the mind,
(no judgment), continue |
to affirm: I am thankful, I
am thankful, I am thankful. Breathe and notice how you feel. Okay if I
don’t include just one thank you in this article I am not going to feel
complete. So, If I were to say just one thank you, I would thank god for:
each new sunrise, every night the moon lights up the sky, and for those it
doesn’t, family, friends, both good times and bad, for the food we eat, the
water we swim in, the air we grow in, all four seasons, every insect , every
fish, mammals, reptiles, every sensation I have ever felt, flowers, every
moment to feel and be alive both spiritually and physically, for
impermanence, ever lasting, for birth and death. Thank you my
lord, and Thank you for taking time to be with my thoughts. Bless you and
may you forever have an attitude of gratitude.
With the greatest appreciation,
Jim

Yoga Workshop With Chris Briney
Take your yoga practice to new heights and new depths in this 12-hour
yoga workshop with Chris Briney.
The workshop classes will be based upon the yoga taught by Sri B.K.S.
Iyengar of Pune, India and his senior teachers, and will focus on blending
meaningful self-expression with precise physical and energetic alignment of
the postures. This approach is designed create the optimal conditions for
the experience of full aliveness on all levels--physical, mental and
spiritual. True to Mr. Iyengar's teaching, we shall explore the practice of
asanas "from the skin to the soul." In the process, all categories of asanas
will be explored, as well as basic yoga philosophy and its relationship to
the practice of Hatha Yoga.
Chris Briney is one of the
most highly trained and well-versed yoga instructors in the Metro Detroit
area. He has been a dedicated student of yoga since 1997, and has
maintained a full-time teaching schedule since 2001. His stated mission as a
teacher is to empower people to become more fully alive and joyful through
the practice of yoga while at the same time, challenging them to explore and
expand their limitations. He is also a teacher deeply committed to his
practice, which he sees as the well-spring of his teaching. This commitment
has taken him around the country, where he has amassed over 1000 classroom
hours
of continuing and on-going training with numerous teachers widely regarded
as some of the finest in the field today. This training has qualified
him to be recognized as the first Affiliated Anusara Yoga instructor in the
Metro Detroit area in 2002 (for more information on Anusara Yoga and its
requirements for affiliation please see www.anusara.com). Also, since
2002, Chris has been receiving Intermediate to Advanced Level instruction
and training in the Iyengar method
of Yoga from Laurie Blakeney of Ann Arbor , Michigan (for more information
please see www.iyengaryoga.com or www.iynaus.org.) He is currently
undergoing a 9 month training intensive and apprenticeship to become a

the foundation for his lively, inspiring, and playful style of teaching.

Mira Shani is a staff teacher of THY at Diamond Mountain University. She
teaches yoga and yoga philosophy in Michigan and Arizona, where she studies
with her principal spiritual Teacher, Geshe Michael Roach. She also studies
the Anusara yoga system with John Friend. She has studied and practiced yoga

What Yoga Has Done For Me
I read a previously written anonymous letter in this
newsletter recently. It got me thinking about what Yoga has done for me.
Every Yoga person would come up with
different reasons, however I
can sum it up in one word - AYURVEDA. The word literally means a cure
through nature. I got into Yoga for reasons of stress & research after what
I noticed in my first Yoga class (in the Rocky mountains of Colorado), which
was that both the teacher & students looked very youthful. I was looking at
all the cute girls, however that is what makes Yoga so special because it is
also social. Yoga has increased my observing ego, which in laymen's terms
means more focused. It has made me more calm, improved my breathing,
improved my skin color, improved my snow skiing, & made me more toned. I
lost 17 pounds in the last 15 months without being on any diet, and have
expanded my intellectualism greatly. Even if Yoga is all bull, I have
surrounded myself with smart people allot of whom have become friends. For
example, one lady I study asana under teaches Yoga to the astronauts, and
reads anatomy books like most people read comic books. I have only been
doing Yoga for two years and what amazes me the most is that I keep thinking
the benefits will stop but they do NOT.
Asana is a form of meditation, and we can be practicing
Yoga all the time. I cannot tell you how much I practice Yoga because I
practice meditation when I walk, & as I write this e-mail. There are people
on this planet who practice Yoga who do not even know what the word means
just by the lifestyle they lead. Some people talk about Yoga coming from the
heart, it sounded strange at first but it worked for me. I do not think Yoga
has to be the path for everyone, as many roads lead to Rome, however it is a
path I chose.
