“The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.” ~Frank Herbert

Exploration In Yoga

Star Trek and NASA have met our curiosity and even over loaded us with information about space. Scientist have combed the earth and waters dissecting everything to explain our environment. Does Yoga offer the final frontier, … exploration of the self? Our brains are full of information, but when it comes to ourselves many of us are baffled. You might be thinking, I know myself, and on some level you do. But, how do you identify yourself? Who are you? Family status, occupation, religion, your possessions, the way you look are all temporary, they change, so they can’t be you. Can you identify yourself without those things? What are you in essence? This is the question that yoga ultimately begs.

For the junior explorer of the mind body connection, asana and pranayama lead the way to the discovery of health, well being, self confidence, balance, right nutrition and the sense of something greater. Studying practitioners usually report increasing calmness and awareness.

We learn where we hold our stress and tensions and eventually begin to feel the more subtle energies of the body. We develop a reverence for the body and begin to treat it with respect. We breath better and over time even the mind begins to quiet and we experience deeper levels of peace. Beneath it all, still the question, who are you?

In the silence we find more. We know we are not our thoughts, and become present to that which observes the thoughts. Through the microscope of meditation the advancing practitioner takes a deeper look within. Like our asana and pranayama practice the journey inward can be slow at first. Just as the body began to open, meditation begins to open up the mind to new realms of possibility.

Does Yoga offer the final frontier,
 … exploration of the self?

We learn about underlying thought patterns and work to change our minds to be more positive and creative. The intellect and memory improve as well as over all health. As the mind becomes quieter, as stillness unfolds, the mystery of what is behind the thoughts unravels, we get closer and closer to discovering our true selves.

When we strip away all that we identify ourselves to be: fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, bankers, lawyers, receptionist, yoga teachers, vegetarians, spiritualist, home owner, Mercedes driver, or what ever we cling to, we are left with what is real. From here we can begin to explore our true nature. Yoga distinguishes all things to be made up of two elements: Purusha and Pakriti. Respectively, that which last forever unchanged and that which is constantly changing. All the worldly things that we identify with are pakriti, always changing. Purusha is the observer changeless without form. Our exploration in yoga ultimately ends up there to probe the side of ourselves that hides behind our personality.

So what is it? Or more clearly who are you? You don’t have to climb a mountain, plunge to the depths of the ocean, nor dissect the body to find the answer. Who are you? Are you ready to demystify the mystery? Yoga presents the final frontier, self discovery, the ultimate adventure. The journey needs to unfold for you personally so you won’t get the answer in this article, but through your yoga practice you will be lead to the discovery. May your journey be a safe one.

Peace,
Jim

Adjustment Workshop
Sundays 7pm-9pm
May 14th, 21st, 28th, and June 4th

With Jivamukti Certified Teachers Micha Adams & Alan Haras

Principles of Hands-On Adjustment - Sparsha
for teachers, teachers-in-training from all yoga traditions. Hands-on adjustments are a traditional means of passing knowledge from teacher to student; called sparsha, it was the way a teacher's touch transmitted infinite knowledge. Sparsha takes students deeper and creates a long-lasting teacher-student bond.

Techniques of Hands-On Adjustment
Sparsha is a Sanskrit word for touch. It is an art and powerful teaching skill. This workshop will introduce propping techniques and adjustments for standing, seated, heart opening and supine poses. It will also provide an opportunity to practice on a variety of body types, build confidence and develop your sense of touch.

This comprehensive workshop will explore:

  • The power of intention

  • standing, seated, heart opening and supine poses (including surya namaskar);

  • adjustments appropriate for different class levels: beginner to advanced;

  • assessing students' needs/different body types;

  • deciphering between a strong adjustment or a light suggestive touch

  • breath-movement principle;

  • body mechanics to protect yourself and keep you adjusting for years to come.

    Karma Yoga ~May Update

    Greetings fellow RSYers...May for me brings thoughts of flowers and sunshine (and birthday cake as mine comes on 5/10). So for this month's Karma Yoga we are going to take on the idea of Anne Terry. She brought an organization called Heifer International to my attention. They have a unique and successful approach to ending hunger and poverty. Since 1944, Heifer International has provided food and income producing animals and training to millions of resource poor families in 125 countries. You can learn more at their website: www.heifer.org. For donations of $30, they will provide hives of bees to be given to families to use for food, income and pollination of crops. Having colonies of bees near plantings can as much as double some fruit and vegetable yields. We will collect money this month and try to donate as many bees as we can. You can give cash (just put into the purple box on the reception desk) or you can write them a check directly (also be great if you put in the box so we can mail it in altogether, but you are also free to use one of the donation envelopes I'll put in the studio and send to them directly. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. You can call me at home at 734.284.8918 if you don't see me around at the studio.

    Last month, RSY yogini's and families helped pack "Snack Bags" at the Gleaner's Community Food Bank Taylor Distribution Center. Again we made record time in getting the stuff together, which Gleaner's distributes to schools, shelters, churches and youth organization to give kids in after school programs a healthy snack. And our homeless service team was out again in force helping to share the contributions from the studio to those in intense need living on the streets in downtown Detroit. Everything we do makes a difference. Change starts within ourselves as we find ways to serve and contribute. Thanks for all your efforts. Pass along any ideas you have for future activities. I need some new things for us to do over the summer.
    I've got some great things lined up for the fall!

    Lisa, for the entire Karma Yoga Team

    Warning:  The information contained on this video can change your life by improving your health.  Medical doctors, registered dieticians, and most nutritionists are NOT teaching the information you will be learning while viewing this video.  Have you ever wondered why so many people are eating "healthier" but are still dying of the same diseases? It is because the "healthier" diets they are eating are not healthy.  Scientific research is being ignored.  Learn the facts rather than the politics and watch health improve.
