Happy Mother’s Day May 8th

Spending Time With Mother

When we take to our mats for asana or meditation practice we journey to the quite place within and connect with our spiritual essence. We spend time with self when we go within and the benefits are numerous. Lately I have been toying with the concept that this connecting is with the masculine part of our spiritual nature. Since we have both a masculine and feminine composite, it follows that spirit would as well. My recent journeys into the woods have me thinking that Mother Nature is the feminine side of our spiritual essence.

I went into the woods with a seriousness about me only to find the white tailed deer prancing about playfully watching me pedal along the single track trail. I smiled and realized the importance of playfulness which is an attitude I felt turn on inside of me. After ascending step hills followed by level easier terrain the heart is pumping the adrenaline is flowing and the senses are heightened to the sights, smells and sounds of the ongoing cycle of nature all around. Tiny wild flowers, the bees that pollinate them, river rats diving to ride the swift current over a short fall, ducks and geese, and grey haired droppings of the local wolves. I believe that on more then occasion the deer were racing us as play or to test their speed. One trail was bordered by tall trees on either side and the river valley was on our left also bordered by tall trees. As we road a white egret soared along side of us over the river, it’s majestic wing span seemed stationary. On one bridge we stopped to the view of a vibrantly colored male mallard duck resting on small grassy island in the middle of the fast moving river. The beauty and detail has been amazing.

I mentioned last month that my first lesson in trail biking was ahimsa to protect myself and to stay on the path to protect nature. My second lesson was on having reverence for nature. My guide which I’ll call Ranger Rick frowns upon racing through the woods just to race through them. Sure on the down hills you’re going fast and enjoying the thrill of the speed, but much of the time is spent at a slow meditative pace taking in, connecting with, and learning from nature.

Over the past four weeks I have witnessed the slow but constant awakening of the woods and the many changes she goes through from week to week. I have rested on huge boulders, fallen trees, and did Regina’s favorite pose on the bridge that crosses over one end of Half Moon Lake. Balance is taught as essential in yoga and there is a very delicate balance that we find in nature. One thing that I have learned from Mother Nature is that she is alive and strong. That we have to have faith that she will live on and that we must learn to do what we can to take care of her and live in balance with nature.

I believe that to be awaken we must take time to visit with both aspects of our essence. Being balanced is essential, so this month make it a point to visit with your mother, Mother Earth.

Om Shanti (Peace),

Jim

You must teach your children that the ground beneath their feet is the ashes of your grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves. ~Native American Wisdom

Wanted II

No I haven’t gone back, thank God, and if you’re wondering what I’m referencing read the article “Wanted” in last months newsletter. Actually, I had so much more to say about the experience and not enough space to say it all that Wanted II was necessary.

First off I’m not sure that I thanked everyone enough that worked to keep business as usual in my absence. Thank you, I am grateful.

Roger taxied me home on my departure date and one of the first things he said was, “there is growth in this you just have to find it”. The fact is that there was so much growth in the whole experience that given the opportunity to change the past I would not excluded that part from my life.

What an eye opener it was to have a warrant out for my arrest. I found it very difficult to drive the speed limit and I started wearing a seatbelt. While I didn’t consider myself a speeder I was. It was only two months earlier that I drove Roger’s van home from Song of the Morning Ranch driving 80’s and 90’s. The next day they had tire blow out and what a miracle it didn’t happen at 90 on the freeway. Finally lesson learned. Life is precious and I’m not immortal.

At first when I gave my meals away I bartered for orange juice. Not really giving. After a few days I truly gave my food away with no expectation of return. I shared the wealth so to say and tried to take care of those who needed it. Soon out of the blue guys were coming up to me throughout the day handing me o.j.’s. As you give so shall you receive. With expectation receiving was surprising and wonderful.

Every 6 or 8 hours a different guard was on duty in the room with their own approach to handling things and there own speech on how things were going to go. The range of ego’s was extreme and how each guard handled things evoked a different reaction from the guests. The level of disrespect was matched with equal disrespect. One guard was amazing and greatly respected. He was calm, respectful, talked to people not at them, and let everyone know up front with sincerity that he was there for them. He also carried himself with great posture and respect for himself without arrogance. You can basically say you reap what you sow.

Another big lesson is in handling the details of life. Even though I was handed an injustice in regards to my support issue, I know that I could of handle things better and who knows maybe prevented incarceration. I am well aware that I carry responsibility in manifesting my life. Doing what we like to do and doing good things isn’t enough in life we have to handle the little details of our day to day living and working. While they aren’t always fun, the details and problems inherent with insurance, houses, businesses, medical bills, taxes, and so on have to be attended to or they will creep up and bite you from behind.

The picture above is from my drivers license that I had to renew the day I got out. I put my hands in prayer position to remind me to pray for those that have to live in those conditions that are so void of nature and beauty.

Finally I would like to thank everyone that called, wrote, stopped by, and supported my decision to share this experience and for the thoughts, feeling, stories, and experiences that you have shared with me after reading it.

With Love and Gratitude,

Jim
