Father! - to God himself we cannot give a holier name.
~William Wordsworth
Happy Father’s Day June 19th
Does Peace Stink?
The very thought of the word peace conjures up so many thoughts and images.
Flower child hand painted Volkswagens, hippies, John Lennon, and protests
against war. Just seeing a peace sign sometimes makes me feel like I’m looking
at a nostalgic symbol of a way of thinking that just didn’t catch on. Just what
has the word peace come to represent. In a world where the insanity of
terrorists’ activity floods our consciousness through news media, has the
thought of peace and especially world peace become nothing more than an
impossibility? A pipe dream for those that live in a fantasy world? Does blaming
someone else for the lack of peace in the world keep us from having to look at
creating peace in our own lives? Is peace a lost cause? Does peace stink?
In Yoga we are taught that we have a responsibility to exist in peace. We
seek peace in our bodies and minds to live in a state of wellness. We seek peace
in relationships with others as we try to live within the guidance of the
Yamas/Niyamas. We practice peaceful conflict resolutions with the intent of
ahimsa, do no harm. We move into the peace within to connect with our own source
or higher power. Peace is an integral part of yoga.
I think that on some level we
all feel that world peace is impossible. War seems inevitable with the current
state of the world and even our major cities are infected with violent crimes.
Does that mean we should write peace off? It certainly doesn’t look like things
are going to get better anytime soon and without a change they probably won’t.
Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” But what possible
effect could one person have on the world?
Let’s play this out. Assume that one person finds love in their heart and
lives from a place of peace. Now let’s say that their influence, teachings, and
example of living in peace creates change in two other people. Then those two
people promote change in two others. You get the picture of how this can
snowball. Now let’s say that there was one person in each city in the world that
we started with. Relatively quickly there can be a paradigm shift in the way
people live, act, and treat each other on every level. The notion of peace as a
whimsical imagined reality would change to that of the norm.
What would it take for this to happen you might ask? Training in conflict
resolution in schools, programs to help decrease domestic violence, cabinet
level representation to resolve conflicts with the intention of peace globally,
and the support and funding to enact the programs just for a start. Pie in the
sky? What if you found out the ground work was already laid? Would you support
such an effort? What message would it send to the world if the American people
made a stand for peace? The cool thing is that this movement does exist and
there are many states and representatives in congress supporting this movement
through the Department of Peace Campaign. You can learn more at dopcampaing.org.
We are looking to spread awareness and support the shift towards peace
understanding that it starts with change on an individual level. On August 13th
we will be sponsoring Yoga For Peace an awareness and fund raising event to
support peace. June 5th there is a conference in Ann Arbor for those
interested in learning more. And June 16 & 25 there is
conflict resolution training at the Unity of Livonia.
The power of peace isn’t in the hands of our world leaders; it is in our own
hands. Peace starts with you and peace starts with me.
“If there is to be peace in the world.
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.”

One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek,
but that it is a means by which we arrive at that goal.

Develop a passion for hoeing. To cut down a weed is, therefore, to do a moral
action. My hoe becomes an instrument of retributive justice. Hoeing becomes, not
a pastime, but a duty. Nevertheless, what a man needs in gardening is a
cast-iron back with a hinge in it. -Charles Dudley Warner "
Back Care In The Garden
There is nothing magic about protecting your back in the garden but there is
however a shroud of mystery regarding the knowledge. Those that haven’t stumbled
upon this ancient wisdom or become hyper in tune with the body often find them
selves with a sore back or worse injury from working in the fields or garden.
Understanding how the spine works, becoming sensitive to what you are doing with
your spine when you work are the keys to back safety.
Everyone’s back and spine are in different levels of fitness and conditioning
so understanding were you at and how hard you should work comes first. Be honest
with yourself about the shape you are in and listen to your body. A little
respect and reverence for you body goes a long way. People that have existing
injuries or previous back surgery should be extremely cautious about there
conditions and follow doctors orders for the amount of work the should do.
Like a good athlete before
jumping into gardening you should warm the body up with fairly simple repetitive
work of the larger muscle groups of the body. Squats are a good way to warm up
and loosen the hip socks as well. Starting out slowly and working deeper and
deeper; slowly is the key. Keep your back vertical while squatting and use a
mirror if you can to practice. Don’t be surprised by what you see in the mirror.
Your body will try to trick you into believing you are straight when your not.
Try to keep your back aligned in the following in manner as often as
possible. From your pelvis to your ribs your spine should have a gentle inward
curve. From the base of the rib cage your spine should have a gentle outward
curve. The spine at the neck should curve gently inward. Most importantly the
spine should be elongated.
Bending over is where we usually get ourselves into trouble. The curves just
mention often get neglected and soon we find ourselves working against our
naturally curved spine to
force the disc out of the
space between the vertebra. Bend your knees when bending forward and try to keep
the natural curves of your spine. Rounding your lower back outward to bend over,
come up, or lift anything is the first recipe for disaster.
If you find yourself bending over for longer then a few minutes to work you
should try to work from a squat and bring the spine vertical. This a lost art in
America, while
people from other countries and cultures often squat for hours in a day many of
us might only squat once or twice a year. Squatting is a great working position
provide the spine is aligned properly. If you hips are to tight or fatigue
prevents you from getting or staying down us a stool or chair.
Twisting is the second recipe
for disaster for the back. If your spine is out of alignment and the disc are
already being forced out of their neutral position between the vertebrae the
wrong twist could send you to see your doctor. Keep your spine straight and
elongated before twisting. Never force the body to twist.
Following these simple rules could keep you smiling about getting out to the
farm or garden this summer. Back injuries aren’t fun and can keep you from doing
the things you love to do. Follow these simple guidelines and most of all listen
to your back.
Plant In Peace,
Jim
Yoga Garden
Thanks to those volunteering to provide herbs, flowers, and vegetables our
yoga garden is taking shape. We still have room to plant more so if you have
something you would like to see growing here please bring it by. Some of the
plantings are very small and unmarked so please view the garden from the grass
until everything takes and gets big.
Free Candles
Do to time constraints we are
currently not holding any candle parties at the studio or on the road. We are
still taking orders however. If you would like to earn free spending on candles
you might want to consider having a catalog party. These are easier and less
work. Simply pick up catalogs and order forms from the yoga studio and show
Partylites great selection of candles and accessories to your friends, family,
and co-workers. Orders of $200 or more earn you 25% in free spending. Smaller
orders earn 15%. The new spring/summer catalog is out so be the first to share
them with your friends and earn free candles. See Jim for more details.
Extraordinary or Ordinary?
How does the extraordinary become ordinary? Plainly spoken there are truly
remarkable incredible things on this planet that we’d both agree are
extraordinary. The Grand Canyon, the northern lights, the migration of
butterflies might top your list or maybe your list is filled with even more
extraordinary things. Take a moment to think of something you have seen that you
felt was extraordinary.
Witnessing extraordinary things leaves one in awe of the beautiful and
profound detail found in nature. Maybe it was the birth of you child or an
amazing shooting star. But what happens when you see these things every day.
What if you delivered babies for a living. What if you lived in an area where
you saw shooting stars every night. Eventually, they may become ordinary to you.
You become desensitized to the miracles of life and divinity. This desensitivity
may already leave you blind to amazing things in your life. Do you take
butterflies, bunnies, and beautifully simplistic occurrences for granted. What
about squirrels, earth worms, or rainbows. This month I challenge you to awaken
your sensitivities to the tiny miracles of life. See the amazing details in
common insects, gaze a little longer at the stars at night, or contemplate the
amazing growth that develops from a single seed. Find the extraordinary in the
ordinary. See the world with child like wonder and amazement. Stay tuned into
the miracle of the now. Occasionally treat each breath like it was your last.
Marvel at all of creation. Take nothing for granted. I would like you to share
your experiences this month by emailing them to info@risingsunyoga.com title
extraordinary. You may choose to remain anonymous or add you name to the
experience. We will share stories in next months article. Thanks in advance.
Namasté,
Jim
