We have to
get quiet. We have to be still, and that’s harder and harder in this
century.

The Other Side of Yoga
Drop in yoga classes mainly focus on the physical realm of our existence, body
and mind, developing a connection through breath awareness. What really develops
the lifestyle of a yogi and our spiritual practice is Yoga philosophy. Yogic
literature (The Vedas) are the oldest spiritual texts known to man and are the
roots from which all religious practices sprouted and branched over time. In
Vedic times (~3000BCE) there was no formalized religion based on the spiritual
practices, but the civilization of that time was based in the Hindus river
valley and Westerners termed them Hindus. Much different then the Hindu
religions today.
Spirituality was mainly a personal practice with teachings
coming from master to student passed orally. Later text the Upanishads and even
later the Sutras codified and some what simplified the practice of yoga. The
Yoga
Sutras,
(~2000BCE), and the Bhagavad-Gita , (~250 BCE) are two of the more widely used
yogic text and the two that we study in our teacher training program. These
texts give definite morals and disciplines to live by including: bringing no
harm to other living beings, avoiding anger, practicing truthfulness, not
stealing, maintaining sexual morality free from lust, non greed or jealousy,
purity (of body, mind, and speech), contentment, discipline, self-study, and
surrender/devotion to a higher power. Both texts also teach that we must be
dedicated to a consistent yoga practice giving up any attachment to the results
of the practice. While hatha yoga is needed for purifying the body and keeping
it healthy. Both the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad-Gita are in agreement that
meditation is the most important and beneficial part of our practice.
The Bhagavad-Gita is one of my favorite reads. Having read
this rich text over 11 times, I’m always amazed to find
something I’ve over looked or
wasn’t “ready” to absorb before. It is a fascinating account of a warrior,
Arjuna, having a breakdown on the battlefield as war is poised to begin. His
charioteer, Krishna, (God Incarnate), guides Arjuna to action and the yogic
life. You’ll probably be surprised to read what it is Arjuna is encouraged to
do, and inspired by the lifestyle.
Yogic text focusing on the practice of hatha yoga surface
much later and date between the 15th and 17th century. The most popular is the
15 century classic, The Hatha Yoga Pridipika.
The philosophy of yoga is very
spiritual leading one from a life of suffering to liberation, separation to
Self-Realization, the unreal to the real. While the life to liberation can be
challenging. A simple formula for success is given, see the divine in all things
and perform all of your actions as actions for the divine. I hope you take time
to explore the other side of yoga.
Love and Light,

Book Study
Love Without Conditions
Reflections of the Christ Mind by
Paul Ferinni.
 Saturdays 6pm -
8pm
(starting March 3rd)
Purchase: book at Rising Sun Yoga or Borders
Contact: Nancy for details or questions 734-285-6146
Book Summary: We
all know Jesus's commandment: Love your neighbors as you love yourself.
But while we are all taught this, we are often not taught WHY we should
love our neighbor as ourself, or HOW to love our neighbors as ourself.
Most of us don't even love ourselves. Collectively, we don't do a good job
of loving others unconditionally, because we aren't taught to love
ourselves unconditionally.
The things that get in the way,
are guilt/blame, fear, projection, unforgiveness, and judgment. We use
these against ourselves as much as we do others When we learn that our
self worth is not based on how others respond to us, because we are
inherently valuable just the way we are, then we learn to value ourselves.
When we love ourselves unconditionally, this in turn naturally leads to
compassion for others and the ability to remove our "conditions" that
prevent us from loving them.
This book teaches that we choose
our experiences in our life by how we choose to act or react, moment by
moment. There is a profound cause and effect between our thoughts/beliefs
and our moods and relationships. How you interpret your experience is
important. Thoughts DO create experience. When you don't understand
someone's behavior, do you choose the worst possible explanation? Or do
you allow yourself to remain open to other possible explanations or points
of view? Our interpretations are often false. There is a wonderful prayer
in the book which addresses this:
"Father, I am willing to change
my mind about this situation. Please help me see this not through the eyes
of fear, but as you see it. Help me see this with equal love for myself
and others."
This book states that healing is
your only purpose here. The shift from judgment to acceptance is the
essence of healing. "Love Without Conditions" will cause you to undeniably
see yourself and where you need to do the work. It will then guide you to
do the work while supporting you. As you work on yourself from within, you
will naturally begin to feel understanding and compassion for your
neighbors in their struggle to do the same. We are all in this together.
We are all one.

Yoga For Stiff People
Presented by:
Mike Goldfield
Mike
has a varied background in yoga. He received teacher training in Ashtanga
Yoga (with Richard Freeman), Anusara Yoga (with John Friend), and trained
extensively in Iyengar Yoga, from which he draws primarily for adjustments,
alignment, and modifications of poses. Mike considers this the tradition in
which he works. His style is playfulness, humility, attention to details of
alignment, and compassion for the student.
Yoga provides numerous benefits for those who practice it. Yet many of us
who see ourselves as stiff have difficulties experiencing the joys of yoga.
In this series, Mike will lead participants in an exploration of
various postures, sequences, and modifications (including the use of a wide
variety of
props) to address common areas of limitation in ways that are safe and
helpful, rather than aggressive and self-abusive. This approach will allow
students to find benefits and joy in their practice no matter what their
level of flexibility. Open to Students of all levels.

Blue Ice Pure Cod Liver Oil

Grandma knew what she was doing by giving us cod live oil. It is high
in vitamin A and D plus Omega 3 oils. The Blue Ice brand is the purist and
highest vitamin content we’ve found.
“Vitamin D may be one of the most fundamentally important
building blocks available to us for creating and sustaining vibrant health.
In addition to its classically understood role in bone formation and calcium
absorption, research has uncovered myriad roles for vitamin D, ranging from
increasing muscular coordination to preventing cancer, heart disease,
autoimmune diseases and radiation-induced tissue damage. Yet vitamin D is
also considered to be "the most toxic of all vitamins..", so don’t over do
it. (From Green Pasture’s Website) For more information visit
www.greenpasture.org and
www.westonaprice.org.
Afraid of the fishy taste, try the mint or cinnamon flavor
and fear no more.
We are also carrying Blue Ice Gold Therapeutics, a blend of high vitamin
cod liver oil-- 5000IU's vitamin A, 500IU's vitamin D -- plus 100mg of high
vitamin butter oil in each dose.
Without vitamin A & D our bodies don’t absorb minerals

Harvest
is a proprietary blend of
sweet cherry, blackberry, blueberry and apple chosen to maximize the ORAC* score while producing a flavor filled juice drink boost. Most high
antioxidant drinks use fruits from far away places in an attempt to maximize
antioxidant score. At Sol Resource we created
a high antioxidant drink made with fruits grown right here in the state of
Michigan. A single ounce of Michigan Harvest provides you with half of your
daily recommended antioxidant intake.
*ORAC
(Oxygen Radical
Absorption Capacity) measures the antioxidant activity of a substance.
Cherry Harvest
American Premium Blends
is
proud to present Cherry Harvest. Cherry harvest is a combination of
tart and sweet cherry blended in such a way to maximize benefits while
providing a surprisingly refreshing taste. Cherry Harvest is all natural
with no preservatives, added sugar or color. This is cherry juice the way
nature intended delicious and nutritious. Tart and sweet cherry juice are
both excellent sources of anthocyanins, a family of antioxidants that give
cherries their bright color but also may play a critically important role in
reducing inflammation, promoting joint health and reducing the symptoms of
gout and arthritis. So try an ounce of Cherry Harvest your body will thank
you for it.
Tart Cherry Harvest
Michigan is the top tart cherry producer in the United States harvesting
75% of the nation’s tart cherry crop. These cherries do not normally make it
to your local supermarket, mostly because the tart cherry crop is sent for
processing into jams, jellies, pie filling and of course tart cherry juice
concentrate. Scientific research suggests that enjoying a shot of tart
cherry juice concentrate might help defuse arthritis pain. It is this
overwhelming scientific evidence that compelled us at American Premium
Blends to create Tart Cherry Harvest, our own proprietary blend
of tart cherry juice that promotes the health benefits of tart cherry juice.
Samples are available at the studio, try a bottle the
taste is great.
