St. Patrick's Day is an enchanted time - a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic. ~ Adrienne Cook
Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Can We Afford

To Be Healthy?

The longer I live the less confidence I have in drugs and the greater is my confidence in the regulation and administration of diet and regimen. ~John Redman Coxe, 1800

I find it interesting that the quotes that I found to compliment this article had dates with them, and that they are both hundreds of years old. There is much to say about wisdom. Wise people know that wealth isn’t all that enjoyable without our health. Yet, how often do we hold back on the funding of foods or activities that promote our good health?

Our local nutrition expert Mark Meyerson believes that one of the healthiest foods is raw cow butter, but I cringe at spending over $13 for a pound butter. Yoga is one of the healthiest activities with benefits in all areas of our lives, but I hear some people say that they can’t afford it. I hear the same thing about locally grown organic fruits and vegetables. It’s kind of ironic. Health care costs, prescriptions, and health insurance are sky rocketing yet we don’t all see the value in prevention. As a nation if we took half of what we spent on treating sickness in a year and spent it on prevention we would be a much healthier nation.

what is really healthy. Our government and it’s agency have proven themselves to be less then ethical when it comes to our good health. The media and corporate marketing mis-educate us on

_____________________

Our time is just as valuable and needed to educate ourselves on what is really healthy. _____________________

health issues and reliable sources of information are few and far between. Doctors too are susceptible to slanted training from greedy pharmaceutical companies. How much time and money can we spend researching and purchasing what is truly good for us ? If we can’t afford health are we ready to accept heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or the scores of other self imposed diseases that are on the rise? Are we destined to spend our “golden years” treating ailments with prescription drugs and doctor visits?

The bottom line is if we are going to be healthy

we need to align our efforts with those organizations that truly work towards our good health and put ethics before money. We need to invest in our resources of time and money in our health.

I encourage you to make a stand for your health. Take sometime to research healthy eating practices and health myths on websites like:

www.westonaprice.org
www.price-pottenger.org
www.
sunlightandvitamind.com

Invest in your local organic farmers:

www.lakeplaincsa.com

www.maplecreekfarm.com

Eat locally grown organic whole foods. Invest in quality yoga classes and make classes a habitual part of your regimen. We have all heard the saying, “You can’t take it with you.” Look at the money you spend on things that detract from your health. Lent is a great time to give up processed foods, soda pop, and white sugar, floor, and salt. The money that you save not buying harmful substances can be applied to healthy ones. But again, research what you think is healthy on ethical sources. The truth is you can’t afford not to be healthy.

Be Healthy,

Jim

     Karma Yoga

Yogic teaches that one path to enlightenment is service. Our Karma Yoga program gives you the opportunity to give of yourself. If one of these opportunities speak to you we encourage you to get involved.

March Karma Yoga…help get a homebound senior a hot, home delivered meal on the Easter Holiday. For a contribution of $5.00 you can buy one meal. Holiday meals are not paid for with the federal and state funds that cover weekday meals, so The Senior Alliance needs to raise extra funds for holidays. This month, Rising Sun Yoga Karma Yoga has chosen to support this important program. You can contribute $5 (or more!) by writing a check to “The Senior Alliance” or giving cash to the RSY receptionist, who will put the check or cash aside for me to get to them. In return, not only will you get the satisfaction of knowing that a senior in our area will get a special meal on Easter, but you can also take a fuzzy peep from the basket.

Volunteers are also needed on Friday, March 31st to help sell peeps and meals at area banks and credit unions. If you want to help with that for a few hours, call my friend Bill Campbell at 734.727.2050 to sign up.

In February, RSY yogini’s went to the Gleaners Community Food Bank Distribution Center in Taylor and packed hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pounds of potatoes into bags so they can easily be given to families and agencies that feed the hungry. Sheri, Marlene and Jacob, Jim, Richard, Kristy, Lisa, Regina and Shawn finished the job in record time, helped with other chores at the warehouse and were invited back anytime. We all went home as Sheri put it, “dreaming of potatoes, scalloped and baked and fried and boiled and mashed”. And we will go back, on Saturday April 15th at 1 pm. More details next month.

Also in April, we will be collecting donations of money to the Heifer Foundation toward the purchase of colonies of bees, which they give to families and communities in developing countries to create sustainable agriculture programs. Thanks to Anne for the idea!

Your ideas are also welcome for the karma yoga in the months to come. Call me at 734.284.8918 or flag me down after class some day and let me know.

    Namasté,

    Lisa

Yoga for Wellness By Mike Wysner (Tips about Exercise:)

    - Should you eat before exercising? Depends. If you exercise first thing in the morning moderately, you burn off the few carbs stored, then start burning fat for energy. However, if your going to do a major workout, lift heavy weights or run hard and long, eat a good breakfast. If your stored energy drops too low, metabolism may slow, to prevent depletion and the body may resorts to breaking down protein... muscle!

    - You cannot spot reduce by exercising one area. Doing massive amounts of sit ups will make the abs. stronger underneath the layer of fat. (And don't buy that electronic stimulator for your gut either). More than half the fat in our body is stored underneath the skin and over the muscle. (Initially, lifting weights while over weight will make you look heavier, until you burn off more fat).

    - Weight gain is simple math, we eat more than we use, than store fat either on our hips or belly fat, harder to lose and more dangerous = heart attacks, strokes). One average estimate; to maintain our body weight eat about 15 x our (preferred) body weight: 15 x 125lbs = 1875 calories a day.

    - To lose 5 pounds... need only do an exercise that burns 50 calories a day! Better, reduce your intake by 50 calories ( 50cal.x 365 = 5.2 lbs in one year).
    - To maintain weight, walk 30-40 min a day for 4 days.
    - To lose weight, walk for 1 hour, 7days a week
    -
Again, you cannot exercise enough to burn off excess weight
    from poor eating habits
    .
A pound of fat is 3500 calories. It's hard to burn calories. Example, each potatoes chips requires 1 minute of running or 2 minutes of walking. The caloric value of a big Mac; 107 minutes of walking, 56 min. running; a donut, 33 minutes of walking, 17 running. The body is marvelous at preserving fat. It's done this for eons, storing fat between the hunt.

    - Key words, STRESS & RECOVERY. ALL muscles work the same way, stress & recovery. The most efficient way to make more muscle, work the muscle hard (increased resistance) then let the muscle recover. The only stimulus that makes muscles bigger is to stretch them before they contract. When you work a muscle hard, you tear tiny muscle fibers. During rest/recover they grow back stronger. A good burn is okay you are tearing these small fibers. Working to pain invites

injury and takes longer to repair (and train again).

    - Stretching strengthens the muscles and tendons. When a muscle and tendon are stronger and longer, it allows more torque and force to be applied to a joint, to generate more force = to run faster, jump higher, lift more, etc.

    - Eat carbs and protein soon after a hard work out: to repair/recover faster.

    - How muscles grow bigger. Exercise forces extra protein/amino acids into the muscle. (Muscles are made of protein... protein is made up of amino acids). More amino acids = bigger muscles. Stop exercising, fewer amino acids = smaller muscles. (Women, traditionally do not eat enough protein they need about 65 grams a day, men about 75-80. If you work hard or exercise hard, need more. Protein is not stored. Eat protein at every meal, everyday).

    - Just exercise will not build larger muscles, (if so, marathon runners would have hug muscles). The exercise must stress the muscle. After resting it comes back larger, stronger. As the muscle grows from your work out you need increased resistance = work the muscle harder = grows bigger. Yoga can build muscle. There is a limit to how large a muscle can get from doing yoga. To make a muscle really large, you must lift heavier and increasingly heavier weights. Also, it is better to use the heaviest weight possible and do fewer rep's (repetitions) than to do more rep's with less weight (toning the muscle). (The heavier weight is stressing the muscle more).

    - Chronic muscle fatigue in athletes is associated with low blood levels of amino acids (protein). Anybody, low on protein will not have the strength they could have with adequate protein. (Which varies depending upon your requirements; your size, how hard you work, etc)

    - Exercise to detox Exercise increases blood flow throughout the body supplying oxygen and removing waste, flushing toxins to liver and kidney for excretion. Muscular contractions work the "lymph system" needle like threads running throughout the body that remove excess fluids and waste (this could contribute up to 10- 15 lbs of excess fluids!).

    - Pumped up Immune System; muscles store white blood cells, the primary defense in our immune system. More muscle, more immunity against diseases.
