Rising Star Plays Rising Sun Yoga
Special Concert With Dave Newman
March 11th @ 8PM
It
wasn’t long after Rising Sun Yoga opened that it hosted a concert with Dave
Stringer. Those that saw him up close in person at this small venue were touched
to say the least. Now Dave plays large venues all over the country with a large
following and nothing quite as personal as when he played here.
Again Rising Sun Yoga presents the opportunity for you to see a young rising
star play up close and personal. Durga Das a kirtan singer and song writer
combines traditional Indian devotional chanting with his own songs of spiritual
love and devotion. His kirtans are joyous, ecstatic, uplifting, and at times
exploding with energy. His latest CD lotus feet is quickly becoming one of my
favorites.
We hope you will join us for this special event and support bring nada yoga,
(the yoga of sound), to our studio. Tickets are on sale now for just $15. You
can learn about David on his website www.davidnewmanmusic.com

Nutrition Seminar
We practice Hatha yoga for better bodies and better health. Yogic text
includes proper eating habits to maintain the bodies health. But what do we
really know about nutrition? Do we really know how to eat right? Should we eat
meat? Is a vegetarian or vegan diet the right thing? Which foods should be
avoided and which should we favor? What sources should we trust for information?
Why is there so much conflicting information out there?
Get answers to your nutritional questions from our Nutrition & Lifestyle
Consultant/Educator Mark Meyerson. Mark will be holding talks on nutrition and
good eating habits on the second Friday of each month at 7:00PM. Please
pre-register to insure you receive a handout. Cost is just $5 all welcome.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to

Nutrition In A Nut Shell
Vegan, vegetarian,
Atkins, high carb, low carb what on earth should we eat? I must admit learning
from a nutritionist, what to eat and what not to eat , was a real rude awakening
for me. Having been a vegetarian the better part of my adult life and raising my
6 year old as vegetarian a was somewhat shocked to hear that nutrition experts
don’t recommend vegetarian diets. I can hear the roar of the carnivores in my
mind as I image this being read. There is contradicting information on just
about everything when it comes to diet. But I think you will find that most will
agree that nothing works for everyone. We are all unique and must get in tune
with our bodies to get a true understanding of what is right for us. Does this
sound yogic? It should. In fact that is just what it says in the book that I am
highly recommending that you read The Yoga of Eating. One thing that this book
and I’m sure the majority of nutritionist will agree on is that we
should eat locally
grown organic fruits and vegetables. That is not to say we should not eat meat,
but a diet high in locally grown fruits and vegetables is a key factor in good
health.
Were do you find such places you might ask? Your in luck. Rising Sun Yoga is
making it increasingly more convenient for you to work with these farmers. We
are teaming up with two local farmers that grow organically. We can’t even begin
to tell you the importance of supporting these farms. But if you saw the movie
The Future of Food you know.
The closest
organic farm to us is the Lakeplain Prairie Farm located in Brownstown
Twp. The farm is owned and operated by Henri and Mary LaFrance (Phone
734-789-1164). They are committed to organic farming and to community supported
agriculture and use their own personal property to promote organic community
farming. When I spoke to Mary a few weeks ago they still had a few openings for
families that want to participate in this years growing season. We are hoping to
help this farm out this summer by providing karma yoga. The farm offers a couple
of plans which include working on the farm for 25 to 40 hours during the season.
The cost of the program is just $400. They put out a really nice newsletter with
information on organic meat farmers too. More information is available if you
ask me.
The second farm is
Maple Creek Farm in Yale Michigan. This program is a little more money,
$525 for the season, but doesn't require any farm hours. Rising Sun is proud to
announce that we will be the Downriver drop off location for this farm this
year. Our weekly pickup day will be on Fridays. For more information you can
visit their website at www.maplecreekfarm.com. I have
heard great things about the weekly produce you receive from these programs. The
amount of food provided each week is more than a small family can handle so you
might want to consider sharing the cost and the food each week. If you need
someone to share with let us know and we can post something at the studio for
you.

What’s Your
Intention?
If the answer
this question didn’t flow from your mental reservoir of thoughts you may want to
take a minute to read on. Science has proven that our intentions not only set
our course of action but actually produce structural change within the body. The
book The Hidden Messages in Water is a revealing theory showing how water is
deeply connected to people's individual and collective consciousness. Drawing
from his own research, scientific researcher, healer, and popular lecturer Dr.
Masaru Emoto describes the ability of water to absorb, hold, and even
retransmit
human feelings and emotions. Using high-speed photography, he found that
crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated
thoughts are directed toward it. (from a description of the book at
www.uptimebot.com). Intentions of love produced beautiful crystals, bad
intentions produced disturbed crystals.
Consider this. Yoga Journal recently published an article on yoga schools in
India. These aren’t your typical American yoga studios but more like higher
learning centers of yoga. The article pointed out that while the schools
differed in ideology from attention to breathing to no attention and detail in
the asanas to no concern for detail the results were the same. Breath work, no
breath work, asana practice or no asana practice, people going to these centers
for health related issues were getting better. I pondered this for awhile. What
is the common thread that links that experience for participants seeking health.
Ah yes, intention. Each person goes with the intention of getting better, if not
why would they bother to go.
The movie What The Bleep Do We Know, (I highly recommend and hope to show it
here in April), describes how messages are sent from the brain to every cell in
the body based on our intentions. What are your intentions? Sure enough what we
do on the mat is practice for life off the mat, a living metaphor.
March which looks like it intends of keeping to it’s intention of blowing in
like a lion and leaving like a lamb will bring about the change of season.
Spring time represents a time of rebirth or renewing. Let the spring be your
reminder to set intentions for the small things that you do and better yet if
you haven’t already set an intention for you life in it’s totality. Now that may
get you thinking. What is your intention? What is your intention for this
incarnation?
Peace,
Jim
Making
Time For Meditation
Of all the aspects
of the yoga practice meditation maybe the least practiced by yoga students and
teachers alike. We all get excited about a new variation of a posture or flow
series, but enthusiasm for sitting still with a long spine for long periods of
time wrinkles many a brow. Everyone has their reasons: my mind just won’t quiet,
I have trouble sitting long periods, can’t find the time or the right place. How
is it that all the other components of yoga serve to aid us in meditating and
meditation is the primary practice of yoga, but we just can’t find the time to
do it?
The goal of yoga is to take control of your own mind, and meditation is the
tool that yoga gives us to take that control. If your mind just won’t quite it
is okay. Stick with meditation it literally took me years before my mind would
quiet. Let the thoughts go wild, just observe them, over time they will
diminish. If you have trouble sitting you may need more hatha yoga for strength
and flexibility or you may need to invest in an meditation seat that provides
the comfort you need. If you can’t find the right place consider coming to
Rising Sun Yoga on Monday nights at 7:30 for meditation classes. There is also a
local group which conducts 10 day meditation courses in Brighton four times a
year. For more information visit this link and scroll down to Michigan http://www.dhamma.org/nonctrw.en.shtml#North%20America.
I can put you in contact with people in the group if you are truly interested.
If you are having trouble finding time take just little five minute breaks in
your day. Sit still, take your awareness inside, follow your breath in and out
of the body, move away from the distractions in life, move toward the inner
sanctuary of your own tranquility within. Close your eyes now and give yourself
those five precious minutes.
The more you go inside through meditation the more you will long to return to
that space. Make the time for meditation. It’s all about you.
Namasté,
Jim
