You have your way. I have my way. As for
the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.”
Friedrich Nietzsche |

What is the “Right” way to do Yoga?
With so many different forms and styles of yoga cropping up in the US,
how do we know which is the right way to do yoga? Has one form evolved to be
the best? Is there an authentic way to do yoga? Is my yoga better than your
yoga? Where do we find the answer, when each yoga claims to be the best?
From the study of the history of yoga going back thousands of years to
some of the earliest recorded writings we can see that even yoga, the
practice of yoking or bringing together to create unity, was approached from
different schools of thought. Of course some thought that their way to do
yoga was the right way and others believed that their way to do yoga was the
right way. Right from the beginning grew diversity in both philosophy and
technique. Even today in India, the motherland of yoga, you will find
radically different views on how yoga should be practiced.
Yoga was first introduced to the US in 1893 in Chicago. It has taken over
a hundred years to catch on but
in the last five years yoga studios have been open in both major cities and
small towns throughout mainstream America. The diversity that yoga
experienced over thousands of years in India is minimal to what has happen
here in the states in just the last decade. We probably have a different and
even multiple forms of yoga for every letter in the alphabet: Acu Yoga,
Bikram, Chakra, …Yin Yoga, even Hot Z Yoga. Some cities have multiple
studios each holding to their own way of teaching as superior. There is
meditation, asana, pranayama, sound yoga, multiple forms of hatha and more.
How can an experienced yoga practitioner know which is best let alone a
beginner?
Probably one of the most amazing things about yoga is that the same
benefits can be achieved no matter what style you practice. All the
different schools, philosophies, techniques all lead to better health,
“Variety is not only the spice of life it is the
foundation for life.”
well being, and a sense of oneness if practiced properly. So what is the
best way to do yoga? The best way to do yoga is the way that feels right for
you. Variety is not only the spice of life it is the foundation for life.
Physically and mentally we are all different and if we honor and listen to
our minds and bodies we will know the right way to practice. As
transformation occurs through the practice we may find that we need to
switch our yoga practice. As our health, age, and mental capacities shift
the focus of our practice should shift too. For beginners the guidance of an
unbiased knowledgeable instructor is helpful. But trying different flavors
until you find the one that agrees with you essential. Even experienced
practitioners should experiment once in a while. We can all benefit from
yoga but the practice must fit the practitioner.
Even yoga can create separation if we hold to the notion that one way of
practicing yoga is better than another. Yoga is to create union, to remove
the veil of separateness. If we stay open the diversity of life and the need
for different paths for different people we can celebrate each and every
form of yoga. Hurray for every yoga, every form creates a path or doorway
that wasn’t available to someone before hand. I encourage everyone to find a
yoga that is right for you. Not what someone else feels is right you but
yoga that resonates good health, peace, love, and oneness within you.
Let’s not look at one yoga being better than another. There is a yoga for
everyone we just need to find the practice that we can gain the most from.
Namasté,
Jim

Sundays 7pm-9pm
June 4th & 11th
With Jivamukti Certified Teachers Micha Adams & Alan Haras
Principles of Hands-On Adjustment - Sparsha
for teachers,
teachers-in-training from all yoga traditions. Hands-on adjustments are a
traditional means of passing knowledge from teacher to student; called
sparsha, it was the way a teacher's touch transmitted infinite
knowledge. Sparsha takes students deeper and creates a long-lasting
teacher-student bond.
Techniques of Hands-On Adjustment
Sparsha is a Sanskrit
word for touch. It is an art and powerful teaching skill. This workshop will
introduce propping techniques and adjustments for standing, seated, heart
opening and supine poses. It will also provide an opportunity to practice on
a variety of body types, build confidence and develop your sense of touch.
This comprehensive workshop will explore:
The power of intention
standing, seated, heart opening and supine poses
(including surya namaskar);
adjustments appropriate for different class levels:
beginner to advanced;
assessing students' needs/different body types;
deciphering between a strong adjustment or a light
suggestive touch
breath-movement principle;
body mechanics to protect yourself and keep you adjusting
for years to come.

Karma Yoga News ~June ‘06
Due to popular demand, the RSY yogini's will return to Gleaners Taylor
Distribution Center on Saturday, June 17th from 1 pm to 3 pm to pack food.
Gleaners distributes food donated from corporations and individuals for use
at shelters, after school and summer youth programs, and other food banks.
Volunteers are vital to their operations as our donation of time reduces
cost in preparing the food for re-distribution. Gleaners is located on
Northline Rd. in Taylor, just east of Beech Daly on the north side of the
street. It is almost directly across the street from the Lakes of Taylor
Golf Club. Sign up today, and older children are welcome to this karma yoga
opportunity, so bring the family.
Other things to do in June: We could use some gardeners to weed and clean
up the gardens at the studio. Have extra vegetable plants bring them up and
we will plant them. This can be done at any time that works in your
schedule, talk to Jim!
Kristy and Shawn again are always collecting items to distribute to the
homeless in Detroit--toiletries, new socks and underwear, portable food like
granola or protein bars, as well as items like hand sanitizer, baby wipes,
chapstick and sunscreen. Please bring to the studio for them.
Dates to save in the future:
Sunday, July 23rd is the second annual Yoga for Peace. Volunteers needed
to make the day run smoothly. Details elsewhere in the newsletter about the
event, and talk to Jim if you want to help out that day.
Friday July 28th is the Senior Alliance Golf Classic at the Warren Valley
Golf Course in Dearborn Heights. The Senior Alliance is the agency we helped
this spring by raising money for Easter meals-on-wheels to homebound
seniors. Bill Campbell could use some folks to help the day of the fund
raising golf outing to sell raffle tickets, set up a silent auction and
other things. He also would love to have you golf in the outing if you are
interested and can buy a package. Call him at 734.727.2050 or check out
www.thesenioralliance.org.
Saturday October 7th is AIDS Walk Michigan--City of Detroit. RSY will be
putting together a team of walkers to raise money for AIDS Partnership
Michigan (www.aidspartnership.org). We take pledges and then walk that day
on Belle Isle. I need to have a team captain for this event as I cannot be
there at all myself. Please call me if you are interested (734.284.8918 or
email Lisa. Rutledge@oakwood.org). Good project for those high school or
Christian service students who need some community service hours.
There is another event on Saturday October 7th (besides the Michigan
State--U of M football game of course) that we can help out at. That's where
I'll be, before I head to the big house to cheer on the Spartans.
Oakwood Healthcare System presents the Red October Run that morning at
Oakwood Annapolis Hospital in Wayne. Volunteers needed to help with the
course, registration, gift tables and more at this 5/10k run and 5 k
walk--named one of Michigan's Top Ten runs by Michigan Runner magazine. Of
course you can always participate with your legs as well. Call Cindy Cook at
313.586.5486 to volunteer or to find out more about the run. You can also
find out more on line at www.oakwood.org.
Thanks for all your help with our volunteer programs.
Namaste,
Lisa |
