Raw Food

Pot Luck

                           Thursday June 21 @ 7pm

The dishes just keep on getting better. If you have been tuning into the talk on raw food you know the benefits of eating foods with all of their enzymes in place. The stories of healing are miraculous and the taste of this dishes are surprisingly delicious.

After last months raw food talk with Michael Dwyer I was motivated to go completely raw. I only made it ten days, but those ten days really had me feeling great. Unfortunately my cooked food cravings got the best of me. I hope you will join us whether you have a dish to pass or just want to sample.

Karma Yoga NEWS

Aloha Everyone! Our Heart Walk was a great success! We raised $2702.00 for the American Heart Association. Not only was it a great event to raise money but it was wonderful to see so many people out there walking. It’s so simple to do and so good for you… just like yoga! I’d like to continue on our path of helping our hearts and others. As I have mentioned before, The Hearts of Hope non- profit group is incredibly vigilant in helping families with children who are affected by heart defects, I’d like us to collect donations of the following:

· Mints, Gum

· Travel Size Hand sanitizer

· Small Game books like Sudoku, Crossword or other activity books

· Coloring books

· Small packs of crayons, markers or colored pencils.

· Gift cards from Meijers (for gas and or pharmacy purchases)

· New children’s books

They will take all these items and make a care package to send to the hospital beds of the families in need. Please go to www.heartsofhopemi.org to check them out. Please bring your items to Rising Sun by June 28th and I will mail or drive them over myself.

I’m going to start writing about things we can do on our own to make the world a cleaner and better place called, “15 Minute Miracles of Green”. Each month I’ll put in a little bit of what you and your family can do to help Mother Earth and even save you a little dough!

15 minute miracles of Green:

These days big stores like IKEA no longer give out plastic bags for you goods. You can either purchase a reusable bag or go without or bring your own. Urge other stores to consider doing the same. Also, grocery stores like Kroger will give you 5 cents off your bill for each bag you bring in to use. Again good for the environment and your pocket book!

This Saturday, June 2nd, The Greening of Detroit is partnering with the Southwest Detroit Viaduct Project to clean and green railroad property in southwest Detroit. We will be planting trees, shrubs and perennials. We would love for 50 volunteers to help out. Volunteers should meet at 9am at the corner of fort and Lawndale. Go to their website: www.greeningofdetroit.com to learn more and to see how you can help.

Just for kids:

Put out a big bag and write “GIVE” on it for your children or yourself and when it’s full take it to your local thrift store. But remember, donate something you would give to your own friends or family. Non Profit organizations do not want your one shoe or broken and cracked dishware. They spend thousand of dollars each year on waste removal that could be spent on those that need it most and they defiantly don’t need glass vases that come with your last flower delivery. Take it to recycling!

Harboring Hate
__________________________________________________

When you think of harboring hate, what comes to your mind. Do you think of people in foreign lands that hate the U.S., terrorist, violent criminals, or villains from a recent scary movie? Certainly, or at least hopefully, you didn’t think of yourself. But honestly, can you look inside and see if you harbor hate? Is there a place in you that holds on to hate?

If we hold on to hate we lose the space for love. We take away our own ability to abide in peace. We weaken our immunity to disease and open ourselves up to sickness. When we hold on to hate some part of us resonates with hate. We create and add to the energy of hate on the planet. We become a part of what we do think about when we consider the expression harboring hate. Why on earth would anyone want to hold on to hate? What do we have to do to give up hate?

For over a year now I have been observing myself for things that I have come to hate and hold on to. Surprisingly they haven’t all been obvious. Some have though, like many unacceptable actions of our political leaders or those that stemmed from past hurts caused by others that I felt have done me wrong. Less obvious ones have come over time. Music that I have despised, some food odors, and others still maybe revealed as I continue to observe myself. Observation or self awareness is the first step in overcoming the harboring of hate.

As we discover the hate festering inside, we have to really have a motivation or resounding philosophy to eliminate it. The opposite of hate is love and loving something you hate can be very difficult. So maybe we don’t have to love what we hate but still sometimes anything less than hate can be tough if we have strong feelings or have to make someone wrong. I may never love the smell of sauerkraut but that doesn’t mean that I have to hate it. As Gandhi said, we have to be the change we want to see if the world. If we want to see a world free of hate we have to eliminate hate in ourselves. If we want to experience peace of mind and good health we have to be free of hate. If we want to practice yoga in it’s truest form we have to be free of hate. So even if someone did me completely wrong, hurt me bad, it is essential to let go of the hate.

Just letting go of the hate is the simplest way to get rid of it. Maybe it takes forgiveness, or seeing something from a different perspective, or looking for the good in what you hate. I have done this by taking time to listen to country music. I have actually had fun singing country tunes with my daughter in the car when I used to say my radio plays ABC music, anything but country. I have recognized McDonalds for their work with the Ronald McDonald House, clean bathrooms, and some effort to add healthier items to their menus. I have recognized that our government and major corporations that are not making decisions in the best interest of the many are just misguided souls in need of prayer.

I can’t say for sure that my immune system is stronger, but I can say that it feels good to give up hate. I hope any residual hates in me surface so I can give them up too. If we all give up hate; just IMAGINE.

Peace,

Jim

Kirsten Says Good-bye For Now,

RSY Welcomes Shawn & Valerie!

Kirsten Antkowiak, our 3-year veteran teacher, is moving to Kalamazoo to be nearer to her family and she will be missed. When asked if she wanted to say anything for a statement in the June newsletter she stood silently looking at the ceiling as she tried to put those three years and what she felt in words. She asked to express deeply felt gratitude to students and teachers and all of those that added to her learning and experiences on the yogic path. She is excited to start teacher training in Kalamazoo in the lineage of Rod Stryker’s “Pure Yoga” and plans to return to RSY to give workshops in the future.

Welcome Valerie!

Taking over Kirsten’s 7:30 pm Tuesday class is Valerie Perez. Valerie’s background as a body builder for 10 years before she turned her attention to yoga gives her a deep understanding of muscular structure. Her love of fun, yoga training and years of physical discipline is a unique combination that gives Valerie the tools to help you make progress on many levels.

Welcome Shawn!

Shawn McCarthy is a schoolteacher for Riverview School System and also teaches kids yoga classes here at RSY. Shawn is probably best known for energetically team teaching many, many of Micha’s classes in the past year where you will have experienced her guiding hands on approach and great dedication to the practice of those in her care. She will be teaching the 5:45pm and 7:15pm Thursday classes.

Blue Ice Pure Cod Liver Oil

Grandma knew what she was doing by giving us cod live oil. It is high in vitamin A and D plus Omega 3 oils. The Blue Ice brand is the purist and highest vitamin content we’ve found.

“Vitamin D may be one of the most fundamentally important building blocks available to us for creating and sustaining vibrant health. In addition to its classically understood role in bone formation and calcium absorption, research has uncovered myriad roles for vitamin D, ranging from increasing muscular coordination to preventing cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases and radiation-induced tissue damage. Yet vitamin D is also considered to be "the most toxic of all vitamins..", so don’t over do it. (From Green Pasture’s Website) For more information visit www.greenpasture.org  and www.westonaprice.org.

Afraid of the fishy taste, try the mint or cinnamon flavor and fear no more.

We are also carrying Blue Ice Gold Therapeutics, a blend of high vitamin cod liver oil-- 5000IU's vitamin A, 500IU's vitamin D -- plus 100mg of high vitamin butter oil in each dose.
Without vitamin A & D our bodies don’t absorb minerals

Michigan Harvest

Michigan Harvest is a proprietary blend of sweet cherry, blackberry, blueberry and apple chosen to maximize the ORAC* score while producing a flavor filled juice drink boost. Most high antioxidant drinks use fruits from far away places in an attempt to maximize antioxidant score. At Sol Resource we created a high antioxidant drink made with fruits grown right here in the state of Michigan. A single ounce of Michigan Harvest provides you with half of your daily recommended antioxidant intake.

*ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) measures the antioxidant activity of a substance.

Cherry Harvest

American Premium Blends is proud to present Cherry Harvest. Cherry harvest is a combination of tart and sweet cherry blended in such a way to maximize benefits while providing a surprisingly refreshing taste. Cherry Harvest is all natural with no preservatives, added sugar or color. This is cherry juice the way nature intended delicious and nutritious. Tart and sweet cherry juice are both excellent sources of anthocyanins, a family of antioxidants that give cherries their bright color but also may play a critically important role in reducing inflammation, promoting joint health and reducing the symptoms of gout and arthritis. So try an ounce of Cherry Harvest your body will thank you for it.

Tart Cherry Harvest

Michigan is the top tart cherry producer in the United States harvesting 75% of the nation’s tart cherry crop. These cherries do not normally make it to your local supermarket, mostly because the tart cherry crop is sent for processing into jams, jellies, pie filling and of course tart cherry juice concentrate. Scientific research suggests that enjoying a shot of tart cherry juice concentrate might help defuse arthritis pain. It is this overwhelming scientific evidence that compelled us at American Premium Blends to create Tart Cherry Harvest, our own proprietary blend of tart cherry juice that promotes the health benefits of tart cherry juice.

Samples are available at the studio, try a bottle the taste is great.
