There are two freedoms - the false, where a man is free to do what he likes; the true, where he is free to do what he ought. ~Charles Kingsley

More Than Just Inconvenient

On Father’s day Kathy took me to see Al Gore’s movie an Inconvenient Truth. If you haven’t seen it, don’t worry I won’t spoil the ending. You probably already know it’s about global warming. Al Gore narrates his movie, which provides substantial photographic evidence, documented scientific research, natural observances, and a projection of where we will be in 30 to 50 years on our present course. America by the way is the leader hands down in the emissions of green house gasses, which is causing the warming of the planet. If you’ve seen the movie The Day After, you know what scientist around the globe are predicting for our future if we don’t act fast.

“The truth is the last thing I want is to scare anyone or make anyone fearful. Instead I want to paint a picture of hope.”

Now everyone is going to have a little different reaction when you talk about an ice age coming in the next few decades. Some will just shake their heads and say yeah, loony as they twirl one finger near their ear. Others shrug, say, “That is interesting”, and then carry on with their day-to-day living. I guess if you’re 60 plus looking ahead thirty plus years might not concern you much or you might feel that it is out of your hands so why worry about it. If you are a young adult, or have young children, or grand children and you care about what their future will be like, you might be thinking a little differently. You might be thinking that you ‘d like to do all you can to prevent it.

So just to take a look at something, let us just hypothetically say that we have ten years to stop the exponentially escalating green house gases into our atmosphere. Or, risk the consequences of flooding heavily populated low lying areas, while facing thirty feet of snowfall with extreme cold in the northern continents. Not a great picture but just stick with this a minute.

Believe me this isn’t easy writing, especially when your feeling like Chicken Little yelling the sky is falling. The truth is the last thing I want is to scare anyone or make anyone fearful. Instead I want to paint a picture of hope. Okay let us say that we have ten years to fix the global warming problem. Now envision the world really choosing to change the future by putting an end to global warming. The technology is already in place. All we have to do as a planet is decide to use it. Everyone can do their part to prevent green houses gases, but we need big technology changes. I have spoke with many people over the last week that have shared some great ideas. Like have GM bringing back the amazingly successful electric car, (zero emissions). Switch to hemp for making paper (save the trees). Make more efficient homes that utilize solar and or wind energy (less dependency on fossil fuels). Plant trees, lots of trees (decrease green house gasses). Raise individual awareness/consciousness of our effects on the planet (each persons efforts make a difference). Support local organic farms as a food source. These things are doable and are not impossible. But what will it take?

We Americans have rallied behind the end to the threat of weapons of mass destruction, peace, and equal rights to name a few. We face adversity with courage and confidence, defeat as a setback to victory. What is to stop us from rallying behind the health of our planet, our home, our Mother Earth?

Now imagine ten years from now these changes met. The threat of global warming ended. The skies, earth, creatures, and water all healthy. Imagine the feeling of knowing that you were responsible. That your care, your concerns lead you to take action, and your actions were victorious. What actions will you take today to help end global warming. It’s going to take all of us but what are the possibilities around trying and what consequences around not trying?

Global warming or no global warming, Global crisis three hundred years from now, fifty, ten or even now we need to be living peacefully with the planet. We need to live peacefully with the planet everyday. It should just be the way that we are. Join us in learning to live more peacefully with the planet by attending our Peace Festival on July 23. Do your own research on global warming and steps you can take to decrease green house gas emissions. Below are a few.

Start a carpool with your coworkers or classmates or bike ride

Move your thermostat down 2° in winter & up 2° in summer

Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner

Buy locally grown organic foods

Choose energy efficient appliances

Insulate and weatherize your home

Switch to green power

Be sure you’re recycling at home

Use less hot water

Meditate Together we can make a difference!

I am so grateful for the help, support, and energy that has gone into this years Yoga For Peace. This year we really want to make a difference with this festival. We are hoping that people will learn or enforce techniques and lifestyles that will manifest more peace of mind, peace towards each other, and peaceful living with the environment. Studies have shown that group meditations cause a shift in consciousness and we are looking forward to affecting the community with 500 people getting together to meditate for peace. You are strongly encouraged to join us for meditation; together we can make a difference.

Living peacefully sounds great, maybe even sounds serene and wonderful. The reality is living peacefully takes work. Maintaining peace of mind, let alone attaining it can take years of effort. Meditation/Yoga is one tool that works to bring about peace of mind. Self study and study of sacred scriptures can be useful too. I attended a concert for peace a few months ago and experienced an incredible state of peace of mind through music. I asked myself what could come along that I would choose to give up this peace. After all, our states of mind are our choice. Sure enough, things came up in my life that I choose to be angry over and had to remind myself and go back to the peace. Like building muscle at the gym, peace comes from repetition of choosing peace and like muscle left unused our peace will wither away too. I love John Lennon’s song Imagine. Imagine all the people choosing to be peaceful.

Peace towards others begins with our own peace of mind. Maintaining peace of mind makes being peaceful towards other much easier. It is tough to be peaceful when we are angry. We get angry for various reasons. We expect certain things to be certain ways, communications go wrong, or good intentions go bad. Peaceful living means giving up the anger, practicing forgiveness, and remembering it is only you that makes you upset.

Living peacefully with the planet can be even tougher then maintaining peace of mind and peaceful relationships. We are born into a structure here in America where profits and convenience far out weigh environmental concerns. Our way of living is backwards in regards to nature and just learning how backwards things are can be disheartening. The efforts that we can make individually can seem futile next to the global problems. Hope and communication are our allies. We must keep hope alive and educate our children, friends, and families on better ways to live, eat, and work. We have the technology to maintain our quality of life here in America and live in harmony with nature. We just all have to want to live peacefully on this planet.

So if your for peace, I hope that you will join us on July 23 from 11am – 6pm at Ford Field in Dearborn.

Om Shanti (Peace),

Jim

He has been a dedicated student of yoga since 1997, and has maintained a full-time teaching schedule since 2001. His passion for his practice—to him the wellspring of his teaching—has taken him around the country and to hundreds of hours of continuing and on-going training, with numerous teachers widely regarded as some of the finest in the field today. His past Anusara studies and his current Iyengar Yoga training deeply influence his lively, inspiring, and playful style of teaching. His classes provide explorations in blending meaningful self-expression with precise physical and energetic alignment of the postures to create the optimal conditions for the positive transformation of his students. His stated mission as a teacher is to guide and support people in taking actions that enhance their quality of life and the quality of life in the world around them, while simultaneously challenging them to explore, honor and, ultimately, expand their limitations.

Restorative Yoga Workshop with Tracy : Visiting Song of the Morning begins to reduce your stress within a few minutes of breathing the air and feeling the energy of the land.
