“A new year is unfolding – like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within.” ~ unknown

As 2005 was coming to an end I spent some time reflecting on what Rising Sun Yoga has accomplished over the last four years. I browsed through each and every one of our newsletters, and with few exceptions I have to admit I am pleased with the path our studio has traveled. As with all new businesses some mistakes have made, but Rising Sun Yoga has accomplished many good things and it’s current coarse of direction is set with the best intentions for serving the communities needs in a multitude of ways. Looking back to the creation of our studio, we promoted it as a spiritual center and I believe it has grown spiritually and helped with the spiritual growth of many. Our monthly newsletter has announced events, featured articles, provided vegetarian recipes, inspirational quotes, and allowed local area businesses and other yoga studios an opportunity to advertise to our readers. We have developed and maintained a 200 hour teacher training program registered with the Yoga Alliance, hosted a cornucopia of workshops, and provided Reiki and Reiki training. We have brought in kirtan musicians: Dave Stringer, Mantra Girl, and David Newman (Durga Das) and our own local kirtan DJ Javier BaRa. We created a cave to do the most revolutionary form of yoga known today, Posture Pro Yoga. We have established spiritual retreats, karma yoga (volunteering) programs, and a lending library.

We have held yoga in the park annually, which has evolved into Yoga for Peace. We have had booths in different events and expo’s, and been able to help out many charities and non profits including: Relay for Life, Tsunami Relief (Food For Life Global), Song of the Morning Ranch, (Golden Lotus Inc.), Katrina Victims, and Sasha Farms to name a few. We have worked to support community supported agriculture and the organic education movement through Weston A. Price and the HT Network. We created a movie night to show movies that educate and stimulate the mind. We have literally introduced yoga to thousands in this community who have never tried yoga before.

Most importantly we have created a community of people interested in improving their lives through yoga and helping others to do the same.  Through the next five years of this decade we aim to do even more. We are shining our light on creating more educational workshops, seminars, and training programs on living healthier more meaningful lives. We’re working towards making it even more convenient for people to make healthier choices for care of their body mind and spirit. and supporting people through those changes. We are working on providing a higher standard in our ever evolving teacher training program, and continue to try different yoga classes, times, and instructors to meet our communities needs. We embrace the New Year with reflection of the past, vision of the future, and good intentions for all beings, as we enjoy each moment of each day. On behalf of all of us here at Rising Sun Yoga we wish you a happy and prosperous New Year and look forward to sharing our journey together.

With Love and Joy

Happy New Year,

Jim

2 Wheel Liberation

This has been an article that I’ve been craving to write. Yet it has been four months in the making. As much as I’ve wanted to write it; the message behind it just hasn’t been clear. The right time to write this article finally presented itself, but only through the actual process of writing the story did the relevance reveal itself. Well I don’t want to ruin the story so I will let it unfold as it did for me.

If you’ve been reading this newsletter for the last nine months or so, you know that I have replaced my enthusiasm of running with mountain biking. As I have written before in different ways, the bike is much more body friendly, mountain biking is a much better overall workout, and it allows me to travel single track trails deep into the woods quickly to commune with nature. One thing you might not know however, is that in August when my truck lease ran out I made my bike my primary mode of transportation. No more truck. I thought I would do this for a month or maybe two depending on the weather. My trip to work is only 3 miles and I normally walk my daughter to school, so the biggest change for me was actually not being able to get out to Ypsi where I normally trail ride. Sure other changes had to be made. I began having some products shipped that I would normally pick up to save the shipping cost and we made the change at the studio to a water filter instead of bottled water. Things worked out right from the get go though and within a month I was actually back out to Ypsi trails regularly well into the snowfall. There has been many changes, but one totally unforeseen change, has taken place.

It’s a funny thing. As a teen waiting to get my license I couldn’t wait to drive. A license and a vehicle was freedom. Go anywhere do anything wind in my hair radio jamming, freedom. I’m sure we have all been there at one time or another and maybe again with each new car or a night time convertible ride under the stars . I thought a month or two of not driving was a novel way to save a few bucks, what I didn’t expect keeps me from buying another truck. You might think that being without a vehicle as limiting, a loss of freedom, a decrease in status. No car, no way! For me the opposite has been true. Being car less has been liberating. No car payment, insurance payment, traffic jams, fueling up, fret over gas prices, oil changes, worry of tickets, license plate renewal, tune ups, parking problems, deductibles, or obligation to wear my seatbelt. Yahoo, let me peddle.

In editing this article I just removed paragraphs that simply witness my enthusiasm for riding. In fact, I just took a break to take out my garbage, I jumped on my bike and took a quick two mile dash through the streets, it’s 1:12am Tuesday December 2005 during my monthly all-nighter in which I write for the newsletter. Exhilarating and joyful was the ride in the cold. On this caffeine free night, it was just what I needed to get my blood flowing once again. But the motivation for my ride was just the thrill of getting to book through the streets with no where to go. Wind in my hair freedom feeling. That’s when it hit me. The relevance of this article isn’t about me biking and what it means to me, most of which I’ve edited out so not to bore you. It certainly isn’t about convincing anyone to give up their vehicle. No, it is about encouraging people to do what they are passionate about. Follow your passion. Make the changes that allow you to do what you are passionate about. Not sure what you are passionate about? The New Year is a great time to explore new things or look back through your life at things you my have already tried and gave up, does your heart long for any of them.

There is a connection between what gets our blood flowing, juices pumping, chemistry churning, energy abounding, and living in the moment. Passion and enthusiasm create the right atmosphere within us to lift our spirits and bring us closer to living authentically. I am riding because I love it. Doing what I love always benefits me in many ways. As you plot your direction into the last five years of this decade how do you see yourself spending them? Will you be making time for what you are passionate about? Will you experience life with fervor zeal delight eagerness and zest? Embrace your passion and let it be. Tell me if your more alive to the moment, enthused, and experiencing oneness more often when your living life closer to or in sync with your passions?

Carpe Diem,

           Jim

Yoga School

The 29th of January is the next starting date for our yoga school. This is a great opportunity to deepen your understanding and practice of yoga. We are really excited about the recent changes to our program inspired by the new requirements of the Yoga Alliance for 200 hour training programs like ours. To help meet the new requirements we have brought Micha on board to teach the philosophy section of our training. We have increased the length of our Sunday class and tweaked the rest of the program to create a more streamlined and efficient curriculum to teach yoga effectively, safely, and as thoroughly as possible in a 200 hour program. If you have been around our studio long enough you have probably witnessed the transformational growth that unfolds for the trainees in our program. If you have enjoyed taking yoga classes and have the desire to deepen your understanding and practice of yoga or possibly teach it, you may want to consider starting yoga school this month. Maybe this is the next step in your journey.

"I love this school.  I have no doubt that this was exactly what I needed in my life for the growth that I have been praying for."  Erin

"I learned to walk further down the yogic path toward inner peace.  Not only did I gain knowledge in anatomy, yoga philosophy and postures, but also learned that I can teach with confidence."  Carrie

Thank you everyone that helped out with our donations to COTS.  The program was a huge success again this year giving those in shelters the ability to give Christmas gifts once again.

From Lisa Rutledge
Hello fellow yogis!
As part of my personal "karma yoga" I have offered to come up with monthly activities for people at the studio (and their families and friends) to do around our community and do good works out there. As part of my work with Oakwood and a long time resident of the area, I have a lot of connections so I hope to find opportunities that touch your hearts enough to volunteer some time. Together we can make a difference. I also would love to have any ideas for us that you may have--you can call me at 734.284.8918 or leave me a message at the RSY reception desk...I have a mailbox there.

For our January Karma Yoga we will be going to the Penrickton Center in Taylor, which is a residential school for visually impaired children. The date is Wednesday January 18th from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We will be assisting with preparing a mailing. Part of the time we will also be given a tour and a short overview about the challenges of being visually impaired and functioning in a society that is not necessarily easy to maneuver without full sight and how Penrickton teaches children. Older children are welcome and encouraged to join us. Sign up at the reception desk at RSY or give me a call if you can help.

Future activities will be at Gleaners Community Food Bank's distribution center in Taylor, the Oakwood Program for Exceptional Families (a clinic for handicapped children, and the Heifer Project. Stay tuned to the newsletter for future details! In the words of Trich Nhat Hanh, "if we do not change our daily lives, we cannot change the world".
