"Look for your choices, pick the best one, then go with it." Pat Riley
All We are Saying….
Is Give Yoga A Chance
Over the years I have seen so many people’s lives change for the better with
yoga. Doctors have sent people to yoga for everything from infertility to stress
relief resulting in success. Toning, weight loss, strengthening, peace of mind,
flexibility, an increased immune systems are just the beginning of what yoga can
do for you. But finding the right teacher or class will make all the difference.
Many many times I have heard people say they have tried yoga and didn’t like
it. Deeper inquiry reveals that they have only taken a class or classes from one
instructor. If you randomly flipped on cable TV for the first time in your life,
viewed one program on one channel, didn’t like what you saw and decided that TV
wasn’t for you, well you’d probably be better off. But applying this analogy to
yoga, especially to someone who understands what yoga’s all about, this thinking
is just plain crazy. There is way to much to be gained by adding yoga to your
life. Yoga boost the end of suffering, the path to enlightenment. You just have
to start flipping through a few yoga instructors to find the right one for you.
Each Yoga teacher is unique and they come in many varieties of styles and
colors.
Fat ones, skinny ones, ones that climb on rocks, tough ones sissy ones even
ones with chicken pox, you get the idea. But, with so many choices how do you
find the right yoga teacher or class for you? For many the first teacher they
try works out perfect. For others it is just a matter of the class time and day
being convenient. But sometimes the teaching style, voice, content, or approach
just doesn’t work for you. While the off button is one option, the better choice
is to try a different channel. Find a teacher and class that works for you. With
so many benefits from practicing yoga it is worth more than a random one time
shot to see if yoga is right for you.
Much Success On Your Journey.
Peace,
Jim
Attachment...Raga
I have a website & a modeling career and last summer I realized modeling
wasn’t the direction I wanted to go in my life. Something wasn’t meshing. I
can’t put it into words, but it just isn’t working for me anymore. For months
I’ve felt like my website is a thorn in my side and I’m spending a lot of time
on something that isn’t bringing me joy or even real financial security.
Recently my Webmaster suggested we take a break from it. You’d think I’d feel
elated, as I should. But nooooo, I feel ATTACHMENT or in yoga what we call RAGA.
Raga is one of the four things that cloud our vision of what is really best for
us, one of the 4 things that cause avidya. Avidya is unclear perception or that
which clouds our Purusa. Purusa is our soul or that which never changes and
always sees clearly. Anything that causes avidya causes dhuka, which is
restriction or suffering. I hear my ego yelling my site is this; my site is
that. I feel hurt when getting away from this work is what I truly wanted.
Does this attachment make any sense? This break should bring me joy, but my
samskara (habitual action) says this change is bad or uncomfortable. Somehow in
the midst of all of this I allowed my identity to get wrapped up into a website.
How does one find peace, joy, and contentment if we see a job, a website, or
even a mate as what identifies ourselves? We are not our jobs, what we wear,
what type of house we live in, or the car we drive. These things are just
additives; just a possible learning experience. Like learning the lesson of our
attachment when it is time to give them up or when the universe just takes them
away.

New Year’s Will Solution
Have you ever chosen a New Years resolution only to find within three to six
months you are rationalizing about your failure? I’ve seen many good intentioned
resolutions gone bad. I’m going to quit drinking, no more drugs in my life, I’ve
given up smoking, I’m not eating chocolate, I’m going to work out three days a
week, I’m losing ten pounds. The fact is if we set an intention in which we have
to rely on pure will-power we are most likely going to fail.
After fulfilling the Buddhist’s wishes, “Make me one with everything,” the
delivery boy accepted payment for the pizza. The Buddhist exclaimed, “hey, what
about my change”. The delivery boy turned and wisely replied, “You of all people
should know sir, that change comes from within.” I love this joke. But more than
just a witty spiritual joke it harbors profound wisdom. Change must come from
within.
“Often we try to use will-power to improve ourselves…The fact is that any
effort at self-improvement or change…relying mainly on willpower is destined to
fail. It means you are divided, that on some level you do not want to do it.
Sooner or later, in a moment of weakness perhaps, or in a moment of
self-forgetting, your true desires will express themselves as actions.” Charles
Eisentein, The Yoga of Eating.
Is it time to try something different this year? Is it time to make changes
from within? And just how do you make changes from within? It starts with going
within. Shedding the layers of protective sheaths, hard emotions, and judgment
to discover what lies beneath. It is taking time to let go of the ego and visit
with the real you inside. It’s going to that place we all end up going to in our
yoga practice. From this place changes evolve without conflict of the will. You
act out of the goodness and love within, treating yourself and others better.
You learn to tune in and listen to what your bodies real needs are.
So use your will to remember to remember to return to this place. See if you
can find improvement without disappointment. “Reshape yourself through the power
of your will; never let yourself be degraded by self-will. The will is the only
friend of the Self, and the will is the only enemy of the Self.” Eknath Easwaran
Bhagavad Gita 6:5

What is Reiki?
Reiki pronounced, "ray-key," is a form of healing touch that conducts energy
from one person to another or to oneself. It is a gentle and nonintrusive
Japanese healing modality that can be used alone or in conjunction with other
programs. It complements holistic medicine, growth therapy and helps restore
balance in the body. Reiki practitioners channel energy in a particular pattern
to heal and harmonize. Unlike other healing therapies based on the premise of a
human energy field, reiki seeks to restore order to the body whose vital energy
has become unbalanced. Reiki energy has several basic effects: it brings about
deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages, detoxifies the system, provides new
vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases the
vibration frequency of the body.
The laying of hands is used in Reiki therapy also as in spiritual healing.
There is a difference though. In spiritual healing, a person with a strong
energy field places his or her hands above a particular part of the recipient's
body in order to release energy into it. So, here the healer is the one who is
sending out the energy. In Reiki, however, the healer places the hands above the
recipient; however, it is the recipient that draws the energy as needed. Thus,
in this case, the individual being healed takes an active part in the healing
process as opposed to having a passive part in spiritual healing. The individual
takes responsibility for his or her healing.
Reiki from a Historical Approach
Historically Reiki’s foundation was built on Traditional Chinese Medicine and
the Philosophy of Tendai Buddhism. The strongest things he drew from Chinese
medicine were the concepts of the meridians (acupuncture guide) and Chi Gung
(breathing techniques) as a means to energize the individuals system more
readily. The Tendai influence can be seen in the Chinese Kanji that he used to
focus his intent.
Mikao Usui was a devout Pure Land Buddhist practitioner, who had become
familiar with eastern and western methods of healing, and synthesized these;
along with other data into what is now known as Reiki. He followed the spiritual
traditions of his family, which were Tendai, but soon took a turn towards a
different path, as he sought out the way of healing more intensely. This path
opened to him with the assistance of a Shingon Priest who was
understanding and supportive of his pursuits. As he continued reaching into the
Esoteric doctrines and mysteries of this sect, it caused a rift between his
family and himself, as to change "sects" was to go against the "family
tradition" and their ancestors. Nonetheless, Usui did eventually become a
follower / disciple of Shingon.
He then decided that perhaps there were parallel teachings in other
traditions, and is reported to have ventured into the Tibetan teachings of
Vajrayana and Tibetan Medicine wherein he found similar teachings to those of
Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. The Tibetan influence can be seen in some of the
symbols that he uses to attune a persons energy field. Mikao endeavored to
synthesize all he had learned into a more formal structure for himself. As a
result, he began to codify the teaching and methods into a personalized system,
which included using symbols, esoteric dharani and methods of "tapping in" to
"bestow power." In the traditions that he had drawn on, a living teacher - known
as
an “Acarya,” usually facilitates the “conferring of power.” Since he had not a
living Master teacher / Acarya, for this new synthesis, he decided to
meditate, fast, and pray - seeking a line of "direct empowerment" and blessing
from the higher spiritual realms. It is said, Usui chose a sacred mountain abode
called Kurama, which was outside of Kyoto. Kurama had been a Tendai temple for
many years, yet visited by monks of differing sects. The temple on the mountain
had been dedicated to Mao-son, Bishamon-ten and Senju-Kannon (also known as Kwan
Yin); who represent the light of the universal soul. Thus, it was a most
auspicious location for his discipline.
Mikao Usui's "empowerment" came during his practice, in alignment with the
Buddha's and Bodhisattvas of the realm upon which he was focused. By gaining a
complete and "realized" understanding, he further developed and refined the
system into a healing and spiritual practice - part of which we today know as
Reiki. Usui is said to have taught many the form that he developed for the
"layperson", but did not teach nearly as many the more "esoteric" form, which
was held for those who desired a deeper understanding; and consequently made a
deeper commitment to the "path.”
