Nutrition Seminar
We practice Hatha yoga for better bodies and better health. Yogic text
includes proper eating habits to maintain the bodies health. But what do we
really know about nutrition? Do we really know how to eat right? Should we eat
meat? Is a vegetarian or vegan diet the right thing? Which foods should be
avoided and which should we favor? What sources should we trust for information?
Why is there so much conflicting information out there?
Get answers to your nutritional questions from our Nutrition & Lifestyle
Consultant/Educator Mark Meyerson. Mark will be holding talks on nutrition and
good eating habits on the second Friday of each month at 7:00PM. Please
pre-register to insure you receive a handout. Cost is just $5 all welcome.

Yoga For Weight Loss Class
Obesity is becoming
epidemic. This at a time when more than ever “fat free” and “low carb” products
are available. Heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer all on the rise
(presumably under our control) despite advances in modern medicine. What is
going on and how do we make sense of it all? Nutrition, diet, exercise and
lifestyle behaviors all play key roles and hundreds of books are around to tell
you how to do it! How do we lose weight with a “yoga for weight loss program?”
Or any program for that matter. By having a thorough understanding of the
“facts” and coming to really know yourself. And applying nutritionally sound
principals. Perhaps you have a different set of criteria for weight loss than
say a person with diabetes, GURD, gout or heart issues. Some things you will
learn in the “yoga for weight loss program;” what is the proper amount of
protein for my needs and body type? What are good carbs and bad carbs? Is fat
really that bad for me? We know it is essential (hence the name, essential fatty
acids EFA’s) but how much and what kind? You can actually lose fat by ingesting
certain fats. Do we really need vitamins and supplements? Recent research
reveals the nutrient value of foods (vitamins, enzymes) has fallen considerably
since the 50’s. How do I increase my energy? How do I increase my athletic
performance? What are good exercises. It takes 2 minutes of walking to burn off
the fat content of 1, that’s one, potato chip. (Perhaps the next time you eat a
potato chip you will ask yourself, how many minutes do I want to walk. If I eat
this whole bag, is there enough time left today? Or this week?! Walking is still
one of the best exercises. It is always available and the good news… every step
counts! But, you cannot burn off enough calories to compensate for poor eating
habits. The human body is marvelous at retaining fat. (Alas, brains cells die by
the thousands but fat cells never die!)
There are general recommendations, i.e. women generally need 65 grams of protein
a day for proper “maintenance.” One of the easiest ways to lose fat and control
sugar, ingest more fiber, about 45 grams.
“Food is the most powerful drug you will ever take” (Barry Sears, Ph.D). You are
what you eat. We all have the common sense knowledge to ’know” what is good for
us, yet, the facts of what is good for us seems to be changing. We know we need
to eat wholesome fresh foods. What are wholesome fresh foods and where do I find
them? It has been estimated that 80% of foods at a supermarket are so
“processed,” bathed in additives and chemicals, raised/grown with hormones,
antibiotics, pesticides and herbicides and genetically engineered, they are not
considered “wholesome.”
How do I resolve my self-defeating behaviors? Despite my intentions and
knowledge of what is proper to eat do you sabotage your best efforts? It has
nothing to do with “will power.” We do not change behavior directly. We change
behavior, (a “response”) by changing the antecedent (A) the condition that “sets
up the behavior” or the consequences the reward/reinforcer of the behavior,
either positive or negative. In other words you cannot eat bad food (the
behavior) if you don’t have it in the house (the antecedent, the thing that sets
up the behavior). Structure your environment. Change your behavior, then reward
yourself. Learn to modify your behavior.
Through yoga you will come to appreciate yourself with compassion. We all have
our own unique gifts. To pluck out one aspect of our self and let that define
who we are is destructive thinking. If you have wondered about any of these
questions and want answers, please consider the yoga for weight loss program. If
you are interested in an eight week yoga for weight loss program ($145) to be
held on Friday evenings or Saturday afternoons please contact the studio,
applications are available. The class is forming and will begin once adequate
registration is confirmed. Mike Wysner
Cost: $145

Each week you have the choice to attend class on Friday or Saturday, make up
sessions available. Classes consist of discussion, lecture, and yoga. Handouts

Reiki and Mind
Throughout my
25 years of experience in dealing with energy work and the experience of healing
and spiritual arts, I have found that all systems have their limitations. Almost
every system of healing can be enhanced by the complementary aid of another at
some point. What is important in every healing system such as Reiki and other
systems that utilize life force energy, is for the practitioner not to stop
there, because behind that healing energy, whether we call it Reiki, chi, or by
any other name, there is a pattern. This pattern is the fundamental building
block of all healing energy. Every healer, in my opinion, needs to spend a
certain amount of time learning to apply nothing more than Mind to align with
the underlying truth.
In Reiki we
think of patterns as they relate to various forms of applying energy. But is
this the last word? Chi or Qi energy is an energy that can be experienced
through the various channels and meridians without our bodies. I have observed
it work through many different forms of healing systems, including prayer. But
what we need to understand is, that if a pattern triggers an effect, it is only
because the power of the Mind energy is behind it. Without the Mind there is no
energy to experience and no energy to connect with for encouraging a healing
process.
We generally
speak of mind energy as though we all knew what it was, and what kind of energy
it emits. The fact is that no one really knows. Nonetheless, we experience its
effects. When people experience themselves in spirit, and by that I mean
out-of-body, as in a near death experience, one finds that mind is more than we
can explain in words of what we know in the physical. Our bodies are composed of
atoms, and these atoms have spaces between them. If mind moves into those spaces
there is a design, a pattern of consciousness. Every physical disease of any
part of the body is also composed of atoms, but if you look at the atoms of
disease, then where is the disease? Where is the illness? Atoms do not change.
Years ago it
was discovered that the atom was not the smallest particle. They look inside the
atom and found that it had a nucleus. They opened up the nucleus and found that
proton. They then split the proton and found the quark, which is the smallest
particle, we know of to date. Perhaps when science moves forward we will find
something smaller. But for now it is too found that the quark has its own
pattern. All these things are invisible to the naked eye, and they are all
energy. Ultimately, things must lead to a nothingness of energy, yet that
nothing must also have a mathematical geometry to it, a pattern that creates
energy and visible things from a non-material nothingness.
Intention is
an ingredient of the recipe of will. Mind is a combination of will and
consciousness. If mind is still, the will is not active. If mind moves, the will
is active. To experience energy one must begin to know the stillness of mind,
the self without the intent, without the will, without the movement. The best
way I can explain it is to use the guitar string as an example. When the string
is still, it is itself, and that is mind without complexity. When the string is
picked, it vibrates and creates a sound, and that is mind working. But the
vibrations produced by the string are as the thoughts of the mind, and this what
humans believe is their real mind. Now think of this saying from the scriptures
in relation and see what you understand of it "Be still and know that I am God."
In essence,
everything about us is already energy, from the physical to the non-physical. If
one learns to see the pattern of ones own essence, then it automatically reveals
the truth of all things related to life-force energy. The question is, can man
endure the fullness of such awareness without going mad? We give names to things
because by doing so it feels familiar and safe. But the things that have their
origin in power of spirit-mind cannot truly be defined by names. They can only
be experienced.
Pure chi
(Reiki) can neither be distilled nor contaminated and mind is not a machine, the
brain is. People often confuse mind with the mechanisms of the brain, because
mind expresses itself through the use of the brain. Mind is really synonymous
with consciousness, or with universal spirit-mind, which can be at rest, or
active. In astral experiences one's mind remains the same, only thing that
changes that the physical body is unfettered. It is the mind that experiences
consciousness, and therefore, the "bliss". Pure chi requires no special state to
express its movement or its stillness. It works like a faucet of running water.
Its flow depends on how open the knob is to regulate the stream. When the nadis
(gate) in the meridians of the body are completely open to express the energy
streams of evolved chakras, the altered states of consciousness flow naturally.
The consciousness of
mind, whether active, or in a blissful state, is a vibration. "Bliss," in and of
itself, is a subtle vibration and an expression of that same mind. The waves and
stillness of an ocean, its ebbs and tides, depth and breadth, do not alter the
fact that it is an ocean. And it is because of mind that one can say; "I
experience bliss." No state of mind can proclaim its own existence without
Mind's consciousness being present, anymore than a wave of the ocean can
proclaim its existence without the ocean. Reiki too follows laws of life, and
what we call "intent" is a directive of the mind, which is its
support. Since Chi (Reiki) can affect matter, it follows that it occupies space;
therefore, it is not the ultimate expression, but only one of life's many
expressions.

The Path
So you feel as if
something is missing? You look to the opposite sex, look to the bottle, look to
a new job, or other things. But is that what is missing or is it something
deeper, something more fundamental? Are you possibly really missing.. your SELF?
I know everyone has their own idea of what GOD is. Call it Buddha, Allah, the
source, etc., but bottom line is this: we all came from something from somewhere
we did NOT CREATE OURSELVES we are merely expressions of something bigger
something beautiful something perfect. It is always in the background, now,
before and for always. Why not today bring that to the foreground? Why leave
this in the background when it so yearns to be in the light of day?
Instead of
realizing this and relaxing knowing that we are loved we are always cradled in
the hand of something bigger something amazing something immense and something
so all encompassing....we grasp, we call ourselves *seekers* when what are we
seeking? we don’t need to search its always there it always will be there all we
need to do is open our eyes and our hearts to what IS & that is, pure divinity.
We can search if we really do enjoy the distraction the search affords us, yes
it is exciting to find this inside each of us every single time, this is called
the cosmic dance. We hide our true nature only to rejoice when we find it again
and again. Or we can end the seeker loop, we can stop in every single moment and
say AH this is it.. WELCOME TO MY LIFE .. breathe .. trust.. release..
It is so simple
yet so hard for our minds to understand sometimes, the simplicity of this... let
go .. Enlightenment or whatever you would prefer to call it is just allowing the
light into a previously dark place. Our issues, addictions, judgments are that
dark place we hold onto these things tenaciously rather than opening our hands
up and allowing our dark spots to float to the sky like a freed balloon. Let
them fluff off into the wild wind as you fly to the sky unencumbered by the
mundane, where all that is, is divine.
Play, become like
a child again. Open your eyes to the beauty and divinity in and around you at
every single moment of your waking day. This is the path that will ultimately
always lead you back to your, self now that we know the destination, let us
enjoy the ride. Go pay your bills, cook your meals, clean your homes, work your
jobs and do it with a song in your heart, turn every action into a prayer and
you will be in the garden, you will be in Eden. We were never taken out, we
walked out, and you never have to walk out again. aum:) *a household yogini*
