“A new year is unfolding – like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within.” ~ unknown

As 2005 was coming to an end I spent some time reflecting on what Rising Sun Yoga has accomplished over the last four years. I browsed through each and every one of our newsletters, and with few exceptions I have to admit I am pleased with the path our studio has traveled. As with all new businesses some mistakes have made, but Rising Sun Yoga has accomplished many good things and it’s current coarse of direction is set with the best intentions for serving the communities needs in a multitude of ways. Looking back to the creation of our studio, we promoted it as a spiritual center and I believe it has grown spiritually and helped with the spiritual growth of many. Our monthly newsletter has announced events, featured articles, provided vegetarian recipes, inspirational quotes, and allowed local area businesses and other yoga studios an opportunity to advertise to our readers. We have developed and maintained a 200 hour teacher training program registered with the Yoga Alliance, hosted a cornucopia of workshops, and provided Reiki and Reiki training. We have brought in kirtan musicians: Dave Stringer, Mantra Girl, and David Newman (Durga Das) and our own local kirtan DJ Javier BaRa. We created a cave to do the most revolutionary form of yoga known today, Posture Pro Yoga. We have established spiritual retreats, karma yoga (volunteering) programs, and a lending library.

We have held yoga in the park annually, which has evolved into Yoga for Peace. We have had booths in different events and expo’s, and been able to help out many charities and non profits including: Relay for Life, Tsunami Relief (Food For Life Global), Song of the Morning Ranch, (Golden Lotus Inc.), Katrina Victims, and Sasha Farms to name a few. We have worked to support community supported agriculture and the organic education movement through Weston A. Price and the HT Network. We created a movie night to show movies that educate and stimulate the mind. We have literally introduced yoga to thousands in this community who have never tried yoga before.

Most importantly we have created a community of people interested in improving their lives through yoga and helping others to do the same.  Through the next five years of this decade we aim to do even more. We are shining our light on creating more educational workshops, seminars, and training programs on living healthier more meaningful lives. We’re working towards making it even more convenient for people to make healthier choices for care of their body mind and spirit. and supporting people through those changes. We are working on providing a higher standard in our ever evolving teacher training program, and continue to try different yoga classes, times, and instructors to meet our communities needs. We embrace the New Year with reflection of the past, vision of the future, and good intentions for all beings, as we enjoy each moment of each day. On behalf of all of us here at Rising Sun Yoga we wish you a happy and prosperous New Year and look forward to sharing our journey together.

With Love and Joy

Happy New Year,

Jim

Sunset 2005 Sunrise 2006

Seems like just yesterday we were encouraged to stock up on fire wood at the house just in case the Y2K issues weren’t worked out and we were without heat. Now we’re flying past half a decade of the new millennium. Life emulates the joke, “if time goes any faster, my days will just be a blur.” The feeling of life moving faster and faster makes us want to slow down, to spend time where it matters most, and to adjust priorities. The end of the year is a great time to do this. It has always been a time for self reflection, evaluation, and change. Learning to change spending habits proves to be the lesson at Rising Sun Yoga. Realizing that every thing we’ve learned was wrong, and having to relearn everything teaches us humility. We are slowly learning the importance of right speeding or action. While we support and provide a high level of expertise in the training of Hatha Yoga, our choice in products to support have not always been investigated in regards to peace and harmony for man and nature. It is a chore to research products and companies that support peace and our planet, especially when you have had little awareness of the resources. Appreciation soars when provided with honest help and guidance for a speedy path to the truth. Learning which truth is the truth is also a hurdle, but one best suited for Ganapati. Desire to serve in the highest capacity, accepting the truth of current weaknesses, finding balance, avoiding extremes, increasing awareness, cultivating love, joy and compassion are the guides for the journey. As Rising Sun Yoga approaches its 4th year it is clearly becoming a community that prays for all the worlds’ beings, meditates for peace, seeks products that are in harmony with man and nature, gives to the needy, and supports one another’s growth. What an incredible journey for each of us. We look forward to the end of the first half of the decade and are enthusiastic about the next half. We hope you are too. So as the sun sets on 2005 and rises into 2006 we send love, blessings, and prayers for a joyful holiday season filled with health, compassion, and peace.

Namasté,

Rising Sun Yoga

 Tibetan Heart Yoga Workshop
with Mira Shani

Series Three: The Infinite Four

Mira Shani is a staff teacher of THY at Diamond Mountain University. She teaches yoga and yoga philosophy in Michigan and Arizona, where she studies with her principal spiritual Teacher, Geshe Michael Roach. She also studies the Anusara yoga system with John Friend. She has studied and practiced yoga around the world, including India.

Join us as Mira Shani leads an ancient flow taken from Keutsang Lama's Machine of the Body. The Infinite Four forms a lasting bridge between the yoga systems of India and Tibet. This bridge is expressed in Master Patanjali's Yoga Sutra and Keutsang Lama's classic. Yoga is highly secretive in Tibetan culture, and only recently have these practices been taught publicly. Experience familiar asanas and learn unique poses while focusing the mind on divine objects. Live the myth, and channel the energy generated from the flow to a warmer, brighter outlook for living.

Mystical Magical Meditation

When we look back in time at Yoga’s history we find that the further back we go the less and less importance is placed on physical postures. History shows us that originally the emphasis was primarily meditation. Ancient yogis realized that the end of human condition started with controlling our minds. Physical postures surely have their benefits but for some meditation can yield the greatest fruits from the practice.

Do you think that you can’t meditate? Many people feel that way. Many say I have tried to meditate but I just can’t quiet my mind. That’s like saying I’ve tried yoga but I couldn’t do all the postures. I tried riding a bike once, but I fell. I burnt cookies once so I could never be a chef. Like anything worth doing meditation is a practice, the more often you practice the easier it gets and the more fun and benefits you receive as well. If we didn’t have stressed out cluttered unfocused minds with so many thoughts running rapid we wouldn’t need to meditate. However, with all the distractions and stresses of the modern world we need meditation more than ever. Meditation is a date with your self. It is the ultimate vehicle to learning about who you really are. It holds the keys to your mental health, sharpens your intellect and unleashes the hidden powers of your mind. Meditation has been proven to yield miraculous results but repetitive practice is necessary. Are you meditating daily? If not I hope this article inspires you to.

...violent crime was reduced by 23% that summer.

Meditation has the power to transform people. This transformation isn’t limited to the meditator. Meditation affects those around the person or persons meditating. In 1999 an experiment was conducted in Washington D.C. which at that time was the murder capitol of the world. 4000 meditators from around the world were flown in to meditate everyday for two months during the summer. The predicted result was a 20% decrease in violent crime over the two month period. Law enforcement authorities proclaimed it would take two feet of snow to achieve those results. The prediction was off by 3% violent crime was reduced by 23% that summer. Stop and think about that for a moment. This study wasn’t a secrete. Certainly federal, state and county leaders and law enforcement across the country heard about this. If they are for lowering violent crime in this country shouldn’t they start each day with meditation? Now that you have heard about it shouldn’t you?

Meditation has also been proven to heal and slow the aging process. “Neuroscience also suggests that meditators who have been practicing TM for more than five years record average levels twelve years younger than their actual age in tests for blood pressure and visual and auditory performance”, boasts The Spirit of Yoga by Kathy Phillips. People are spending thousands and thousands on medications, popping pills, and absorbing the ill effects of the drugs. Insurance rates are increasing dramatically and an alarming number of people are being left with no insurance. Shouldn’t the health professionals recommend meditation to their patients and practice it as well. Shouldn’t you?

We know that people were meditating 5000 years ago and maybe well before that. The mystical practice leads to self actualization, attunement with the divine presence within, good health, and amazing extraordinary powers as well. Are you ready to start a daily practice of meditation?

If you need a place to practice meditation, or someone to guide you, we maybe able to help. We offer a 30 minute meditation class on Monday evenings at 7:30 which is free and open to all. The one hour 5:30am class on Tuesdays and Thursdays is followed by and optional 30 minute meditation. If these times don’t fit your schedule and you have a sincere desire to learn to meditate please call the studio and we will do our best to help you out.

If you are fortunate enough to know how to meditate, and have the right space for it, I encourage to continue to practice both for you and the people around you.

Om Shanti,

Jim
