Rising Sun Yoga Just Past The Five Year Mark

Looking back over the past five years there have been some dramatic changes in the world and yet in some ways things are still the same. In yoga we are taught to witness how thoughts manifest our reality. I have witnessed this many times in my life and am optimistic that that is what we are seeing here in America. First in thought and then in action. America is changing the way it thinks and I expect that soon the actions of this higher thinking will manifest into a new direction of action.

Five years ago the war on terror had just begun and the majority of Americans were all for seeking revenge for 9-11. Now with reports that the war has caused an escalation of terrorist acts, no weapons of mass destruction, higher oil prices, more service man dead and tens of thousands more injured than 9-11 caused, most Americans feel the war should end. Yet the war goes on.

Five years ago most of us had not even heard of global warming or knew of it’s impact around the globe. Since then movies like the Inconvenient Truth, and worldwide reports of scientist agreeing that the man made environmental crisis is having irreversible consequences has made global warming a concern for us all. Yet the United States government fails to acknowledge or to take any action towards the problem.

Five years ago most of us didn’t know the difference between organic foods and non organic foods. Now thanks to movies like the Future of Food, and groups like the Organic Consumers Association people are becoming more aware of the health benefits of organics and the detriment to health and the environment of non-organics. Local stores like Meyer and Kroger are even carrying more and more organic foods now. But again State and Federal leaders tend to side with genetically modified food, factory farming, and the spraying of toxic pesticides and insecticides.

Even the medical industry is experiencing a huge change. Doctors are starting to prescribe alternatives to taking of pill after pill. Eastern techniques are no longer looked at as taboo. We have actually had people come in with prescriptions for yoga.

Five years ago most people had not heard of yoga, there weren’t many yoga classes around, and few yoga teachers.. Now turn on the TV, pick up a magazine, listen to the radio and chances are you are going to see or hear some reference to yoga. People are hearing the positive benefits of yoga, they are thing about it, and more and more are practicing yoga each day. Yet there are still many people however, that think they can’t do yoga. Rising Sun Yoga is committed to being here to support the community in practicing yoga, and we are optimistically looking forward to the changes that are sure to come. First in thought then in action. Thank you for five wonderful years.

Peace,

Jim

Karma Yoga News

Aloha Everyone,

I’m so happy spring is here! It is renewing my spirit and getting my brain fired up; I have lots of ideas for upcoming Karma Yoga events.

I want to thank those that have donated items and money for www.heartsofhopemi.org , especially Terry Grieves and Julie Matthews last month. Last week I drove out to meet the president of Hearts of Hope, Jill Teats, to drop off the bags and boxes of items. She was so pleased and appreciative of our efforts. There were books, markers, games and things for the parents as well, this past year Hearts of Hope has sent out 30 care packages and over 50 other donations to families in the hospital. They also held annual events to recognize and spread awareness of Congenital Heart Defects. They are a noble charity and worthy of our future participation. This brings me to my next bit of information regarding our hearts, health and children.  As I have mentioned before there will be 2 walks to raise money for research, education and awareness:

· March of Dimes Walk on Sunday April 29Th Hart Plaza Detroit @ 9am

Please go to this website: www.walkamerica.org/388119 to donate securely online or you can leave cash or checks (payable to The March of Dimes) at the Rising Sun Desk. Donations will be picked up on April 26th. The walk is a 6K. Please join us, our goal is a small one but every dollar counts for this non-profit organization that helps babies. I will be there along with our yoga classmate Renee Hribar.

· The Heart Walk on Saturday May 19Th Southfield/Evergreen @ 9am

Please go to this website: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=181636&supId=162878256 You can click on the above link to access our team page and sign up for the walk, learn about The American Heart Association and or donate securely online. There will also be a “♥” box located at the Rising Sun Desk to donate any cash or check amount (payable to The American Heart Association). Donations will be picked up on Thursday May 17th. The walk is a 1 mile, 5K and or 10K, you may pick any route you like so please join us and help beat the most deadly health problems in America, congenital heart defects, heart disease and stroke.

Just for Kids:

We went to Disneyland in February and as we are going through the “Snow White” ride my daughter looks at the dwarves’ diamond mines that are pilled high with precious jewels and says without any previous mention of the subject,” don’t you just want to give that to charity?" I was so proud of her; her true spirit of giving came out. As with all kids she has some sharing issues but for a 5 year old to say that was great. It's never too early to get your children involved in acts of kindness. Now that the weather is getting warmer, children can have a lemonade stand and donate the profits to their own school PTO or to a local animal shelter, nothing is too little.

15 Minute miracles:

It's all about what is right for you. But the point is to do something and not to go through life with blinders on. Ask the confused looking person if they need assistance, help the crying child that looks lost if he or she needs help. Life is not a reality show on TV that you can watch from the comfort of your easy chair, get out there and live!

Let’s keep the fire burning.

Your Donating Diva – Jessica

Raw Food Pot Luck

Thursday April 12 @ 7pm

Rising Sun Yoga’s first pot luck was a huge success. The food was amazing and there was plenty. Raw lasagna, mashed potatoes, dips, wraps, drinks, burgers and deserts that dazzled the mind and the taste buds. If your eating raw, trying to go raw or just curious join us for a wonderful evening of eats and socialization. Bring a dish or just come and sample. Students that took the 5:45 class were pleasantly surprised by a free meal and how good raw can be, (hint, hint) . Believe it or not there wasn’t one salad!

Please join us on Thursday and let your taste buds open your mind to raw food.

May 9th Micheal Dwyer will be back to give a raw food intro class for free. This will give you an opportunity to learn the benefits of eating raw, sample some dishes, and ask questions. Needed healing or to improve your overall health? Going raw will give the body what it needs to heal, and strengthen.

Mindfulness in Motion

At times, in the past, I felt like I was missing something, like I was stuck, and not growing as a person. When we fail to notice life moving around us, life actually passes us by as well. We fail to notice how we are really feeling about things, and end up doing things we really would rather not.

Sometimes, we fail to notice how we are breathing, sleeping, or eating and end up with physical illness and dis-ease. Other times, we may fail notice what we are thinking or how we are behaving and may end up with unhealthy mental, emotional and relationship habits.

Tai chi Chi kung is about developing a life-long practice of increasing our mindfulness so that our experience pf our lives become more effective, happier, and fulfilling. In this way, we increase our personal growth and provide ourselves with the ability to face new challenges with great skill, peace and wisdom.

Mindfulness is a wonderful way of learning these skills. Mindfulness- in-Motion is an even better way of developing the ability to be at peace, even when “On the Go”. The world rushes by all around us, but our own inner stillness projects positive change wherever we go.

Tai Chi is Mindfulness-in-Motion raised to its highest art form. Yet it is simple, easy to learn, and fun to practice. With only 13 steps to master, it can be learned in less then eight sessions. The Masters used to say, however, that anyone who learns the thirteen steps, has mastered the entire art of Tai Chi Chuan.

Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us. ~ Dalai Lama

Blue Ice Pure Cod Liver Oil

Grandma knew what she was doing by giving us cod live oil. It is high in vitamin A and D plus Omega 3 oils. The Blue Ice brand is the purist and highest vitamin content we’ve found.

“Vitamin D may be one of the most fundamentally important building blocks available to us for creating and sustaining vibrant health. In addition to its classically understood role in bone formation and calcium absorption, research has uncovered myriad roles for vitamin D, ranging from increasing muscular coordination to preventing cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases and radiation-induced tissue damage. Yet vitamin D is also considered to be "the most toxic of all vitamins..", so don’t over do it. (From Green Pasture’s Website) For more information visit www.greenpasture.org  and www.westonaprice.org.

Afraid of the fishy taste, try the mint or cinnamon flavor and fear no more.

We are also carrying Blue Ice Gold Therapeutics, a blend of high vitamin cod liver oil-- 5000IU's vitamin A, 500IU's vitamin D -- plus 100mg of high vitamin butter oil in each dose.
Without vitamin A & D our bodies don’t absorb minerals

Michigan Harvest

Michigan Harvest is a proprietary blend of sweet cherry, blackberry, blueberry and apple chosen to maximize the ORAC* score while producing a flavor filled juice drink boost. Most high antioxidant drinks use fruits from far away places in an attempt to maximize antioxidant score. At Sol Resource we created a high antioxidant drink made with fruits grown right here in the state of Michigan. A single ounce of Michigan Harvest provides you with half of your daily recommended antioxidant intake.

*ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) measures the antioxidant activity of a substance.

Cherry Harvest

American Premium Blends is proud to present Cherry Harvest. Cherry harvest is a combination of tart and sweet cherry blended in such a way to maximize benefits while providing a surprisingly refreshing taste. Cherry Harvest is all natural with no preservatives, added sugar or color. This is cherry juice the way nature intended delicious and nutritious. Tart and sweet cherry juice are both excellent sources of anthocyanins, a family of antioxidants that give cherries their bright color but also may play a critically important role in reducing inflammation, promoting joint health and reducing the symptoms of gout and arthritis. So try an ounce of Cherry Harvest your body will thank you for it.

Tart Cherry Harvest

Michigan is the top tart cherry producer in the United States harvesting 75% of the nation’s tart cherry crop. These cherries do not normally make it to your local supermarket, mostly because the tart cherry crop is sent for processing into jams, jellies, pie filling and of course tart cherry juice concentrate. Scientific research suggests that enjoying a shot of tart cherry juice concentrate might help defuse arthritis pain. It is this overwhelming scientific evidence that compelled us at American Premium Blends to create Tart Cherry Harvest, our own proprietary blend of tart cherry juice that promotes the health benefits of tart cherry juice.

Samples are available at the studio, try a bottle the taste is great.
